The pinyin would be a lot more helpful that splashing a bunch of hanzi everywhere.

Great that you know hanzi, gratz. But not helpful to him.

I posted the text, which contains some Chinese characters, for the benefit of the OP. She has thanked me privately and stated on this thread that she will be using the text. Aricoh36's enquiry was incidental, and I extended to him the courtesy of a reply.

Could you please explain the point of your above-quoted comments?

Quote:
Man, don't do the gig. The people organizing it are making money from it somehow down the line. You are helping them to make money, and you are not getting any piece of that pie, friend.

PRIOR to your post, the OP clarified that she had not sought opinions or advice about whether she should do the gig, she requested advice and suggestions about what to do at the gig. The OP has expressed to me privately her opinion about messages such as yours.

I am sure that you think you have the support of all other forum members with your childish antics of negatively responding to almost every message that I post. How about sending out a multitude of PMs and find out the truth?

Alternatively, why not complain about my every message to the moderators whose opinion on forum behaviour and content is the only opinion that counts?

Lets stick to the topic and away from comments directed at the messenger and not the message. If not, the thread will no longer be available among other things.

Alright people, I performed the 'gig' and it was a huge hit! This was thanks in big part to AussieGuyInChina who forwarded a speech about Xmas. I loved his message about Xmas actually being an international festival that focuses on spreading happiness, peace and goodwill to all people. I revamped it to fit my primary school audience, and felt that with some Xmas songs, etc. 10-20 minutes with such a multi-level audience should be no problem.

Having been in China for some time now, I have learned to come over-prepared and prepared for disappointment. Well, the Chinese didn't let me down! I was whisked backstage and, 2 minutes before going on stage, was told to "keep it to 10 minutes or less"!

The speech had to be edited down for a second time. But, I did a bang-up job for the kids, by presenting the Xmas speech, getting everyone to sing Jingle Bells, and then finished off by teaching everyone a 'funky-style' Head & Shoulders activity, which they loved! Total time = 9 minutes! I was a hit!

For those of you who actually submitted advice, thank you. For the others, don't you think it's time you all returned home?! No more posts please, this thread is DONE!

Vikuk, be nice, it's China we're all languishing in. Every foreigner here is entitled to their English Corner moments of fame, surreptitious cellphone camera snaps at the park, and the occasional treat to dinner for having helped out with "a good cause".

Back home it's just 3983-21-A290 plodding along with the other bundles of lifeless packaging. At least here you might find yourself in an advertisement for the usual drudgery!

gee just do it. 20 min? That is nothing for the amount of good will you could create. It does not matter if they like it or not. It's the though that counts. Just go up there and lecture for 20 min. no sweat.
To say no is mean.

Why does your "hanzi" show up as Hanzi on any computer, but other people "including me" use hanzi only shows up as characters on my computer were I downloaded software to recognize hanzi?

I've installed 2 Chinese - English - Chinese dictionaries on my computer both of which self-installed Chinese fonts, including system fonts. Maybe the answer

Thanx. Ignore any one's criticism, except mine of course.

This is china . Sing a song do a dance and make them laugh at the impoverished foreigner.
Actually this is like shooting fish in a barrel. Put on a Santa hat and have the kids come up one at a time and ask them questions in English they understand . Ask the teachers to come up and sit on your lap and ask them if they were good teachers this year? I sing the twelve days of Christmas to them (kills ten minutes).
But really it is time Chinese respected foreigners and paid them for their services. I've have done the Christmas gig many times here and now they want me to travel thousands of miles for 1000 rmb. I can't do it because I have exams to mark classes to be made up,do to the holidays.
I have become Chinese now . The spirit of Christmas means "What's in it for me.

Kingsoft Powerword 2006.

I also have NJStar Chinese word processor which also self-installs Chinese fonts.

I have Windows XP with US English / US keyboard the only language installed. Likewise for Office XP. I have never changed my 2 browsers; Firefox and Navigator.

I can send and receive Chinese e-mails and I can copy Chinese text from websites and past it into Microsoft Word.

Now that I think about it, I reckon NJStar is the reason. Below is the blurb from NJStar's website (http://www.gold-software.com/download8901.html).

NJStar Chinese Word Processor reads, writes, edits and print Chinese text on normal English or western Windows without the need for a Chinese system. It also includes a powerful English-Chinese/Chinese-English bi-directional dictionary for instant dictionary lookup. Pro or higher edition of the software also have handwriting recognition (draw Chinese character with mouse pointer) and Chinese Mandarin pu tong hua text-to-speech functions.

Main Features:

1. Cut-paste Chinese text between email, web pages or other Chinese sources and NJStar for Chinese editing or instant dictionary lookup.
2. Extensive Chinese language learning functions such as Study List, Chinese Word Annotation, Convert Hanzi to Pinyin, Hanzi of the day, and Hanzi Information;
3. Full Windows WYSIWYG editing with multiple document interface;
4. More than 20 Chinese input methods including Pinyin and English-Chinese methods;
5. True Type Chinese Fonts are available in Professional versions.
6. Chinese hand-writing recognition and Mandarin text-to-speech pronunciation are avaiable in Professional versions.
7. Chinese character vertical printing;
8. Type/edit Chinese and English on the same line;
9. Chinese Character "Radical Lookup" method;
10. Save Chinese file in HTML web page format.

Aussi Guy all computers in CHina have Chinese writing . You just hit the bottom two tabs on the left and you will switch into Chinese. You type the Pinyin and choose the character you want.
