Very glad you are going to give Newcastle a second try. It is a superb city. I spent four years there and loved it. The people are truly something else. You might want to catch the Metro to North Shields and walk along the coast all the way to Whitley Bay. Great beaches. Used to love that walk. A walk along the Tyne at the Quayside is definitely worthwhile as steampig suggests. Crown Posada... haven't heard that in nearly ten years but, when I left in 1994, I didn't know of a single pub there that didn't play music so loudly you'd have trouble holding a conversation. What is it with that? Maybe times have changed. |

Scot,
If you're going to Newcastle on my recommendation, I'm flattered. I don't think you'll be disappointed. While you're on your way to Hadrian's Wall, take in beautiful places such as Hexham and Alnwick and don't forget Bamburgh Castle, Lindisfarne and Berwick. Northumberland and the borders are Britain's best kept secret. Linguistically, it's also interesting to compare the accents of the geordies with those of Northumberland and especially Berwick as they gradually transform themselves into a Scottish accent.
I feel quite homesick, I shall desist!
A point of etiquette. Newcastle Brown is locally known as 'dog' or if you're feeling confident with the accent 'broon'. Asking for a 'Newkie Brown' is, in the wrong bar, the equivalent to asking for the fastest way to the nearest A and E (E.R. if you're American). |

North of the Tweed, where I grew up, we called them Newkie Brown, but then we grew up believing that Southern English slur that "A Geordie is a Scotsman with his brains knocked out."
Berwick is interesting too, and I would like to ask you when we can have it back. Berwickshire is in Scotland. It is about time we got the county town back ! You have had it since the time of Edward, Hammer of the Scots. |

What will we do with it ? Hold it on to it of course !
The same as the French did with Calais and all those other parts you used to occupy ! |

Hey,
As for the Jewish Quarter of Krakow being filled with people playing "Fiddler on the roof" tunes, I guess you've never been there with a Pole.
And in regards to the hooligan being British or English, It didn't matter to me-they were still unhouse broken knuckleheads. |

I had the feeling that Berwick was Scottish when I was there. It didn't seem like an English town, so as a grand gesture, you can have it. Just tell them I said so.
XXX is quite right. I was a tourist in Krakow, whereas I lived in Lodz and hence met and partied with more Poles. That is probably why I have more affection for Lodz. That and the fact that it gets such an unremittingly bad press in Poland and so someone has to stand up for the place! |

yeah, have to agree about Krakow.
Except in Kazimierz I don`t know the right places. I found it to be kind of dirty and run down.
I don`t think Warsaw is a bad place. It certainly has parts that look ugly, but there are nice people there. I had a good time. I think Lolek is a good place to be. Warsaw`s old town and new town`s are nice. As are Lazienki and Wilanow.
Warsaw can get crowded since it is where the jobs tend to be.
I had a good time in Lodz, eating Vietnamese food, drinking at the Baghdad Cafe, and eating fresh bread in the wee hours of the morning. There is more to Lodz than Piotrowska Ul.
A lot of people in Lodz can`t find work, which is why they go to Warsaw.
Students at the uni there have the highest scores on Cambridge exams (for proficiency, or at least used to) in Europe.
Prague is great. The beer is so cheap and good.
Berlin is a nice place for a stroll.
I like Paris too, but it is expensive.
In Japan, I would probably say Kobe. There are mountains, good restaurants, and jazz.
Parts of New York I don`t care for, but I like the Village.
Had a good time in Montreal this summer.
In America I like Burlington, Vermont, Portland, Maine,
Boston, and my hometown Ithaca, New York |

Thank you, psychedelic! It's somewhat reassuring to know that there are more annoying people out there than me...

| I've worked in the following locations, Taipei Taiwan (Blechhh, air pollution, bad traffic, crummy food, expensive, and spoiled rich girls with bad teeth), Hsinying Taiwan (provincial Taiwanese [with a capital T] but the people are very friendly), Seoul Korea (Great bath-houses, cold winters, crappy bosses), Kuala Lumpur Malaysia (great food, nice people, I'd go back) Bangkok Thailand (air pollution and bad traffic, noisy as hell, but charming in bits), Hat Yai Thailand (work in Hat Yai and live in Songkhla is my advice), Honolulu Hawaii (Aloha doesn't come cheap) Auckland New Zealand (Expensive over-rated dump, but nice food) Christchurch New Zealand (flat, nice, a good place to raise kids). |

I have been in Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon for about a year and this is the first stop as an English teacher so I can only speak to actually living here, but I've been happy.
I have visited several cities in Thailand and Cambodia. I don't think I would want to live in Bangkok (personal preference, not a dig on those that do) because it is too big for my tastes.
I like Phnom Penh, but I don't think I'd want to do more than 6 months or so there (but then I'd only planned on 6 months here).
I have a lot of freinds who loved Ankara, Turkey and I plan on going there, but #1 on my list of places to work is Vladivostok. |

| Why Vladivostock? How much could you make there? I've never heard of someone teaching there before. Interesting. |
