I've used Mexican issued debit cards for various on-line purchases over the years and as recently as last December.
I no longer have a US credit card--citibank cancelled it for lack of use, without warning, I would have probably bought something if I'd known that was going to happen. But I often buy things on-line. I don't know if it matters that I usually have them shipped to a US address then someone brings it to me in Mexico.
I have found a few sites that won't take cards with a non-US billing address, but luckily they sell more and more things on Amazon these days!

Huh. Maybe I just can't get my debit card to work on paypal, then. Or maybe just a further manifestation of the evil of Banamex. I told the bank guy I was wanting a credit card for online purposes because I couldn't use my debit card, and he didn't mention that that was out of the ordinary. Wacky.

You have all been so incredibly generous with your time and advice. Since this thread is now 3 pages long (and not everybody will have the time to search through all the posts for all the valuable info) I've tried to consolidate it here in a single post. As I understand the situation (and please DO correct anything I may have misunderstood) here it is in a nutshell:

You need an FM-3 in order to open a bank account in Mexico. Depending upon where you work, you may or may not be able to obtain one. It is possible, however, to get by without an FM-3 or a Mexican bank account. If you will be working without an FM-3, find out how you will be paid. If paid by cash, or if your employer can set up a "nomina" account for you (where they can deposit your earnings every payday), then this will save you from waiting in line for hours to cash your check at the bank from which the funds will be drawn.

Check with banks in the states and Canada to see if they have affiliate banks in Mexico which could be useful in terms of transfers and withdrawals from your account in the states or Canada. Citibank is affiliated with Banamex and Bank of America is affiliated with both Scotiabank and Santender Serfin. You may be able to withdraw money from your account in the states or Canada from Mexico (by using your debit card, issued in the states or in Canada, at the affiliate bank) without any service charges. You can not, however, deposit money while you are in Mexico into your account in the states or in Canada. In order to deposit money in Mexico, you would have to have the FM-3 in order to open up an account in Mexico.

Additional helpful tips: be sure to call your credit/debit card company before leaving for Mexico to let them know you will be in Mexico and will be using the card there. Otherwise, they may freeze your account under the assumption that the card has been stolen. Depending upon where you are, you may have problems cashing travelers checks as well as large-denomination peso bills (500 or, possibly even 200 peso notes).

Once again . . . thank you SO MUCH all of you who have taken the time to contribute to this thread.

Linda

Samantha: I was tired and wrote a Homonym. Thank you for pointing it out. Im honored you read what I write so closely. Your mannerism shows that you really need to try and enjoy life a bit more. If you think trying to be perfect is what you are pointing out, it just shows how imperfect you really are. In kinder words, get a life.... did someone beat you when you were wrong? Moderators really need to look at your comments, and insist on maybe some therapy. Good Luck!

The same could be said for at least one other poster on this thread.

Uh, hello? If you look again, you will see I didn't make a comment. I was too speechless after reading your posts, and wouldn't have known where to start with comments.

Samantha: You always make a comment with words or with lack of. Your comments are mostly insults and criticisms that offend and put others down. One does that to make themselves feel better. You must be feeling great...

Are you trying to see how far the moderators will let you go? Quite frankly, I can't see what you have to gain by insulting regular posters who do nothing but help others on a regular basis. You have a school to run, so why not focus on that and cut the crap here??

PostPosted: Fri Mar 28, 2008 6:20 am    Post subject: Money Transfer from Mex to USA Reply with quote

Is there anyone here that can help me with the easiest and cheapest way to get money from Mexico to the USA. I've thought about opening an account here in NYC that has branches or affiliates in D.F. But I thought I would check here first.

I have a friend that wants to pay me for a laptop and cell phone. I purchased the items here and am mailing them to Mexico. Since $$$ is tight, I am trying to find an economical route for him to send the money without being charged some outrageous fee.

I've seen that PayPal does transfers, but I don't know if my friend in Mexico would have to have a U.S. bank account to use PayPal.

Any suggestions? Thanks a million guys. Wink

Paypal is available to those with Mexican bank accounts too. That is a viable option if he has a bank account.

P.s.

Have you checked into this to see what he will have to pay to get this delivery? The goods have to pass through Mexican customs office, and duty will be levied. It could be a sizeable sum. (Protection of Mexican economy). I don't like to frighten you, but sometimes goods disappear never to be seen again, while clearing customs. "We sent it back".
