| I fully appreciate that and understand that in many Middle Eastern countries the Masters is a requirement. I just wanted to make the point that having a Masters isn't the sole making of a good teacher. |

Considering that most of the teachers that I worked with had a Master's, I didn't find that much relationship between an MA and sense of humor or lack thereof.
And the old (and I mean OLD) debate on whether one needs an MA to teach or what makes a teacher - is it an art or a science - can it even be taught to someone - has been beat to death endlessly since this board began. But the reality is that if employers require it... and the best ones do... and the ones who pay the most do...
Seemed reason enough for me to get one.

A masters in the UAE?
Yes, essential.
All that money and time I invested in mine, certainly made me a far far better teacher than I was before. All that knowldge I now have about those really useful theories and niches of marginal interest have enabled me to teach say the present perfect so much more imaginatively and effectively to our studes than I would have without the MA.
Shame on those who may think it is nothing but a cynically gained receipt to enable access and gain credibilitiy to the high-powered, cutting edge world world of TEFL in the Gulf. |

So what is the range of money that you can make in UAE with a Master's ?
I'm considering getting one, too, and would have 7 years of TEFL experience at its completion in addition to my TEFL certificate and undergrad degree (chemical engineering, actually).
I'm currently teaching in Taiwan and enjoy it quite a bit, but can't get a Master's here that's worth anything...I'd like to get to the Middle East in the future, but would like to have some idea of the likely salary with the Master's...
Also, is there a preference for the M.A. to be in TEFL or Linguistics?
thanks! |

There seem to be quite a few people around who believe that a lack of qualifications somehow lends them character and a certain 'panache'.
That in itself is quite funny, I suppose.
But I'm not sure we're laughing with them. |
