Here's a question I've been wondering about...
If you happen to be working under the table how does the payment system work? Do they pay you daily, weekly, monthly? Cash? Can you get set up and paid within a month and collect your last bit of pay within a reasonable time from when you finish working? |

Get the money FIRST!! You may NEVER see it if you don't. Trust no one! Mexicans will say that they are going to do something or they will tell you verbally that they'll pay you on a certain date. Don't believe it.
In Mexico you can only believe what a person says they will do ONLY after they do it. You won't need a contract, you'll just need the money up front...BEFORE you start the class.
One of my wife's brothers fixed computers in factories and he has the same problem getting paid. And he has a contract yet doesn't get paid for MONTHS sometimes and these are companies that have the money. HE told me to never trust what people say here until they actually do it.
So again, get the money right before the class starts. No money no class |

Pretty broad brush stroke there, Mr Furgers. I've never once been stiffed by anyone for a class I've given, and I've never asked for the money up front. While it's good advice to be careful in whom you trust, I don't think one should walk in expecting the worst of everyone. That's a great way to set yourself up for a negative experience here.
Correction: I am currently waiting to be paid for a class I gave about 2 months ago. I don't feel I've been stiffed though by the British gentleman that owes me for the class, so his country's reputation is still intact in my books. |

I've never been stiffed by a private student in Mexico. In fact, I recently had the opposite happen: a student who's been having trouble getting re-started with classes promised to come this past week for 5 hours. When pressures from setting up his new business got in the way, he actually paid me for the entire week, even though he didn't make it to even one session! |

Don't pay any attention to the nervous nellies. Pack a single bag and get the next one way flight. You'll make it.
Don't think about it. Do it ... |

It must be so stressful to live in a country where you think nobody is worthy of your trust. If that were me, I would be busting my a** to move elsewhere or go back home. |

| There is no problem getting paid if your rule with private students is two weeks payment in advance. The only time I have been stiffed is by Tech de Monterey and private schools in Tuxtla Gutierrez (the private schools eventually paid me after I threatened them with the office of arbitration and reconciliation) |

Totally rude. You hang out with the wrong crowd, obviously.

Not stressful at all because I know some people can be trusted. Anything related to business for example. I'm talking about people who do odd jobs and little things like that.
And it is true that Mexicans would rather say yes then to say no so for things like social events, take what is said with a grain of salt. I'm not stressed at all Milenka.
I actually like it here in the big D.F.
No plans to go back to the States to live. Have you seen the two candidates? |

Since when is telling the truth based on ones personal experience rude O wise Samantha?? As I just posted a couple of seconds ago, I wasn't talking about ALL Mexicans, but everyone knows there are times when Mexicans, just like everybody does sometimes, don't do what they say they will do.
It's called human nature.
P.S. Don't hate me Samantha. I'm still in my adjustment period. |

Perhaps taking some of these ideas out one the Cultural Shock threat would work better?
I posted a lot, and would really like to see what ppl think about what I posted. It did honestly helped me (and I am in a frustrated - critial mood). So it would be nice to hear about ones thoughts on life here. |

Hey, dixie, I have an idea. Why not start a new thread with the interesting material you posted here on the cultural workshop your school held for new hires. |
