I think people need to list the drawbacks of other countries before they start throwing the sh*t at Kuwait..........high taxes are a bit of a bummer everywhere in Europe, Smog and Tibet put me off China, paedophiles and the sex trade don't inspire me about Thailand...........need I go on........... |

the first lines in my work in progress, WHAT TO DO IN KUWAIT, is
You're in Kuwait.
Welcome to the suck.
But there are things to do.....
Miski, have you drunk the Koolaid, girlfriend (maybe you NEED some Koolaid)? Don't be a Kuwait apologist. Tell these people the truth. It sucks here. I've been here for over 15 years - first got here chasing Saddam out. It sucked back then. It still sucks.
Kuwait sucks.
Now that we're in agreement, there are things to do....money to be made....and suck to write about. |

!5 you're hving a bad day! I really do like it here. I don't like the heat, the lack of views and the beaurocracy but I chose to stay here; I was single and could have gone back to Italy. I really do like Kuwait, but as anywhere, it 'sucks' at times. |

I honestly never thought I'd live to read that quote from you!
I haven't been here as long as you and 15, but after 5 years, I am in agreement. It does, in fact, suck here. However, there are things I enjoy. Not necessarily about Kuwait, but about living here. I have a good network of friends. I enjoy my job. Easy to save $$. I'm treated well. Once you get settled and established in your job and housing, (still a big ? for me!) Kuwait is comfortable. It doesn't have a lot to offer, IMO, but you can make a life here. |

Glad to have made your day Rommel! Sorry about the turn of phrase- I never use the term suck.....but I was paraphrasing:)
I never denied that Kuwait has its bad points, I just stuck up for its good points!! What annoys me, as I said, is people who have one bad experience and condemn a whole society. Glad you enjoy it here- what level do you teach? |

True. People like that would be unhappy anywere, though. Glad they're gone.
BTW, I'm taking over a new position next year with our EFL program. You? |

Ah good luck, I did EFL for ten years (1988-1998) and although we always use TEFL in class, I am a Primary class teacher all subjects. I think everyone here should also be TEFL trained. |

middleeastman,
Why don't you drop the "US redneck contractors" words? |

Have you ever been to Kuwait? Truer words were never spoken... or rather written. This was the case ten years ago before the US completely occupied Kuwait to invade neighboring countries.

So... apparently you are a redneck with very thin skin... who has never been to Kuwait.
Do you have any useful information to add or are you just trolling from the Asia section?

and just what do you also add here, VS?
oh yes, your dated - when was the last time you were in KUwait or saw contractors? - experience? oh yes, you still know people here?
which makes it third hand experience
i work with contractors daily and have known a 'redneck' or two in my time - i'll take them ANY DAY over people from Wales, Australia, or South Africa and MOST DAYS over people from Scotland and TEFL teachers who have never had a professional job outside of TEFL.
they have to work for a living not just go over pages in a textbook
wanna hit on 'rednecks' or 'contracters' ? then PM me |

I know very well who the military contractors hire and I grew up and now live in a redneck area of the US. One side of my family is still full of them. Yes I still know a number of people who live and work there - and some of them work directly with these contractors.
Some people tolerate rednecks (you) and others don't (middleastman). And I agree completely that the term redneck also perfectly describes the same sort of people from the UK.

Q8 is fine if you are married with clear financial targets....those EFL types with Thai wives seemed to be plugged in to some sort of mafioso network.
Some EFL management jobs there pay very, very well.
If you're single and like a drink then head elsewhere. |
