The Saudi Arabia team has two long jumpers who are real medal contenders, and have both jumped well over 8 metres this year.
And those two guys are real Saudis, unlike Bahrain, Qatar which import athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia and then change their names!
Saudi has no imported athletes.
Track and field action starts next Friday, August 15. Watch this space for updates on the Saudi fortunes.
How is the coverage in Saudi. I am not there yet?

This is better, ladies and gentlemen. The fur is flying. Tempers are frayed.
BTW I see nothing wrong with an interest in the Balkans or modern German literature. I can't imagine Gunther Grass enjoying Riyadh, however. Even if he were alive. |

In the strange alternative reality of Imamradlinrol GG may be dead. In the real universe inhabited by mere mortals like us, Volksgenosse Grass is alive and well. He not long ago survived the admission that he had been in the Waffen SS. Something he kept quiet for many years.
Actually Grass is not my main man. Thomas Mann is he. Also very keen on Hans Fallada. |

I stand corrected. I thought Grass had died. What does Volksgenosse mean, BTW? |

Well, where are you? Or don't you know? I know where I am and I'm glad it's not KSA. |

My German is a trifle rusty (despite all the WW II movies I've seen) but I believe a fair translation of Volksgenosse would be "national comrade" or compatriot. But of course, that's merely the denotation; it omits the sinister connotations. GG by the way, is 70 years old, a spring chicken.

| Born in October 1927 he will be 81 soon. No spring chicken. Were he seventy he could hardly have done service for Fuehrer and Fatherland in the Waffen SS ! |

Dear scot47,
"How did we get here ?"
Considering how long you've been there, my guess would be you arrived in the back seat of a de Havilland Gipsy Moth.

Can't you remember, my fellow Jock? Given your age, you probably arrived at the old ''Riyadh'' air base on a plane with propellors. Probably sweating buckets and asking if the natives were friendly. Were you wearing a pith helmet? |
