Prof Gringo, you might be talking about First Stop in the New World by David Lida. The eponymous thread is about 2 pages back.
I love the books and beer idea - there are "nice" places that serve botanas and beer, "los Remedios" is one, and while I would be reluctant to go to a place like that by myself, (and anyway what's the point?) it's fine for a group. Most of my books are in Spanish, but I have a few to pass along in English as well.

Was Aztec the book that had toward the end the interesting "fact" that the heads of the poor folks who were being burned alive in the plaza gave off a high-pitched whistle?
