Prof Gringo, you might be talking about First Stop in the New World by David Lida. The eponymous thread is about 2 pages back.
I love the books and beer idea - there are "nice" places that serve botanas and beer, "los Remedios" is one, and while I would be reluctant to go to a place like that by myself, (and anyway what's the point?) it's fine for a group. Most of my books are in Spanish, but I have a few to pass along in English as well. |

Was Aztec the book that had toward the end the interesting "fact" that the heads of the poor folks who were being burned alive in the plaza gave off a high-pitched whistle?
