Now that we are exchanging tips about where to find stuff...

Try Panaderia La Esperanza on Calz de Tlalpan (northbound side) at the General Anaya stop. Overall excellent bakery (bread and cakes) but they have these really huge great oatmeal cookies. More oatmeal than goo and practically a meal in themselves. My roommate gets into a funk when they are out of them.

I know of a good Arab place near Metro Viaducto and a Turkish place in Col Cuautemoc (first one cheap the second, not so cheap)... will get back with addresses.

Thanks Milenka for the Tallers Extras store!

The Turkish place recently opened not far from me (Restaurante Turco, Ro Pnuco 163-A). Their comida starts at 89 pesos, so it's not so cheap, but it makes a nice alternative to the usual fare available around here. The friend who first told me about it says that every time he walks by it, there's no one inside eating, not a good sign, I fear. Before it disappears, we're going to have lunch there in a couple of days. I'll report back on how the food and ambiente were.

I cant say I would be surprised if it closed but really saddened. We went there and met the owner who immigrated here to Mexico with his family and his savings with this restaurant in mind. Decided on Mexico over the States cuz he figured that he would kinda corner the market here! Very Happy He is a really sweet guy and will treat you like royalty.

My friend told me that it's really a big place with a terrace and a VIP section in addition to the main dining area. Maybe the owner would have a better chance of success if he'd started off with a smaller space and added on dining areas as business grew. We're going there tomorrow - we'll tell the owner that you sent us!

I liked the food there, but the prices have to come down. If he were right on Reforma, okay, they could charge that much, but they are a little off the suits' beaten path.

Only???? I've had some pretty good haircuts in DF for $50! I know of one place that charges $56, man or woman, and does a good job.

You also miss knowing where to find the good steaks. Perhaps it's because I am in La Laguna... but if I really want a good steak, it's easy to find. The best steaks I've found here are local beef served in Argentine steakhouses or by Brazilian sword slingers.

There's a place on Reforma SLP that charges $10 pesos - can't speak for the quality. For that price I'd assume the 'stylist' was blind.

I have to second that I'd miss...

big fat juicy steaks and public libraries.

Maybe it's Tampico, but I've had the worst haircuts here, some cheap and some costing a bit more. I have figured out that just because it is an estetica, doesn't mean that the stylist has had any training. Once I went to a corner place where they didn't wash my hair and the "stylist" didn't even seem to be using proper hair scizzors. Mind you, it only cost me $100 pesos. I guess I just have to pay the big bucks and go to the fancy places. Oh, and forget about natural-looking highlights because Tampiqueos seem to think large streaky hair is nice.

So, I guess I miss knowing where the good places to get haircuts are.

What? No public libraries? They are my most favorite things in the whole world.

And this haircut thing. I would have brought my hairdresser along with me if I have a small fortune to enable such a thing. I just assumed Mexico would have hair stylists who I could at the very least take a chance on. However, I did bring my hair cutting scissors and am capable of cutting my own hair.

Good information

Oreen, there are great hairstylists in Mexico, especially in Mexico City where, if I remember correctly, is where you'll be staying. There are also public libraries... full of books in Spanish, of course. They might not be spotless or rich in terms of the collections they have, but you can also go to a university near your area and sign books out as a community member, you don't have to be a student or teacher to do so. Things in Mexico are not as cheap as some people imagine/wish them to be, I guess particularly things that seem/feel cheap back home turn out to be expensive here (and viceversa!). But that doesn't mean they don't exist!

After watching a sham of a Mexican trial today (based on Napoleonic law) where the judge and the lawyers walked away with 8,000 pesos, I miss the US legal system where one is innocent until proven guilty.

I think that's about to change. Mexico will going over to the "innocent-till-proven-guilty" system in the near future.

El Gallo, regarding that trial you watched, I don't understand how the judge walked away with some of that 8000 pesos
