I think Shmooj like to have a little fun teasing the Canadians that's all, to get us riled up. I think he secretly wishes he was one of us, can't blame him. |

Errrr.... surely you mean "tatters". It's a nice image though - a department in taters

| In the year I have been there the Head and I have worked on a plan to better the department. I was promised when I arrived I would have the complete backing of the school. They gave it to me. We now have 7 new ICT suites, 3 new staff members who are committed to turning the situation around and we all work our buts off to make it better for our students. We just finished an HMI inspection and passed with flying colors. |
This is great. I am really glad that you passed that inspection (OFSTED?) as they are darn hard to pass - especially with flying colours.
One point though - a year anywhere is precious little. Sure you have done a good job but the proof of the pudding is going to be where it all is in ten years. Are you committed to it for that long? Not a snide question - just interested.

| You did however forget the fact that 30% of the teaching force will be leaving the profession in the next 3 years. |
Sorry, I was unaware I had been informed of this. Now, if I was in your shoes, which, as you remind me in your post, I am guilty of not being. I would read between the lines here. 30% of the teaching force have been there longer than your one year and they also probably happen to be the true followers of John Bull that I am not. IOW, they probably love the good ol' U of K. If so, why are they leaving?

| so they abandon ship and go to China, Japan or wherever. The salaries are comparatively low there but it is a new experience. Something to write home about. You are the new Stanley and Livingston out instructing the ignorant. |
You are right that they abandon ship. You are wrong that they go to China Japan or wherever. On my Trinity Cert course, all but three of 12 were teachers who wanted to abandon ship. I was the only one on the course who ended up in TESOL. THe others had the qualification. What they lacked was the freedom to go to China, Japan or wherever or perhaps the guts. But they didn't go so don't think it is a way out. I challenge anyone on these boards in China or Japan or wherever to tell us here how many teachers you work with who have abandoned the UK education system. There'll be precious few.

| I notice you are from the UK. As a Brit why are you not here fighting for the betterment of students in your home country. |
I can hear the glass breaking now... I am from the UK but who said I was a Brit? It is one thing to be born in a country and get your passport from it. It is another to be a patriot. It is not my home country. I have lived more outside the UK than in it. My home is right here where I'm typing and I am fighting for the betterment of students in my home country. How's education in Canada these days

| The reason I am HOD and I am paid well is because I get the job done. I work hard to make my classes and my department an effective learning experience for all 600 students who take ICT classes. I have made a difference and I am proud of the fact. Grades have gone up considerably and students enjoy coming to class. Isnt that what its all about. |
This is good. I'd be proud too. Congratulations on turning it all around there and making it happen. Sure, if I had a kid in education in the UK, I'd want them at your ICT department.

| PS: Grow up! I wouldnt make fun of Canadians or other North Americans. We pulled youre a** out of the fire in enough wars. I had family that died defending your island. |
I thought you said that you'd been reading these boards for some time. If you had, you wouldn't have taken that wrongly. Others know what I mean. Shame there's no pinch of salt smiley
As for the war... sheeeshhhhh Kato this is not the time nor the place...
As for what you said about my "a**" bear in mind you are with plenty of English teachers who know how to use grammar. I don't appreciate being called an "a**" with no article. |

Dear shmooj,
Alas - you seem to have descended in the picking of nits. Repent and save your immortal soul before it's (notice the apostrophe) too late.

| If you want to teach get a teaching degree and a professional certification. |
Ah, now there's the first rub I detected...and from chinadan's original post.
Many who are in this profession are not teaching ESL but EFL. So, they are not in their home country, nor are they in another native English speaking country. chinadan is in the ESL field at the moment (and apparently complaining about it without specifying ESL vs. EFL).
Those that are in non-native English speaking countries are there to teach English seriously or not. Here in Japan, I see many who simply want to come for the parties, the sightseeing, and the mythical streets paved with gold to pay for the parties and the sightseeing. Teaching comes much further down their list of priorities. Sad but true. This, I think, is the key point to those in the EFL world, chinadan. Not everyone is in this because they are serious about teaching. Have you considered that? Perhaps so, with your statement:

But, you sure don't act like it!

| The point I was trying to make is that for the few here who give good advice and tell a true story there are about a thousand who do not. |
To quote the philosopher Homer (Simpson), "Doh!"
Nothing new here. Not even a trace of controversy.

| Dont you just hate the same questions asked all the time with the same answers posted. |
Yes, but since many people are new to such boards and don't yet know how to search for information (or don't want to, and thus rely on quick answers to their ever-repeated questions), we make FAQs or new forum sections (like the Newbies) or we (professionals, that is) simply reply as succinctly as possible. Your little opening tirade was pretty much just as boring, despite the fact that it has stimulated discussions to 3 pages, and was about as unprovokedly condescending as I've seen in a while. Slow day at the office?

I actually went through a recruiter to get here to the UK and found out that he not only ripped me off but was giving out bogus information to the schools they were recruiting for. Two young kids arrived here last summer on holidays after they were promised by the recruiter that they would be able to secure teaching positions in the local school system once they arrived. They both had CELTA certification. Both were turned down for jobs.
Perhaps they were just gullible or nave, regardless I get a little pissed when some really poor advice is given out without knowing the facts. I speak from direct experience and hopefully if only one person benefits then it was worth it. |
If you were really concerned about the plight of workers in the UK, why didn't you start something more specific about that, and add some caveats to help those poor people? You seem to have had the experience for it.

| Quit taking these responses personally. |
Hey, you started it with the way in which you wrote! Since most people here, as you say are not qualified teachers, or some such thing (and nobody will serious disagree with you, or had you noticed?), what sort of response did you expect? "Gee, chinadan, thank you. I have seen the light and will return to my home country to hike up my pants, wear a tie, get some continuing education credits and an MBA to enter the business world."
Hardly. |
