Note that he is comparing here to Warsaw. It is not so difficult to believe a triple in salary and benefits from there. I've seen jobs for Eastern Europe in the hundreds of dollars US. It strikes me as a very good place to go visit from someplace where you can make a decent living.
By the time I factor in cost of living, I am quite satisfied with my salary here. |

Salary in Oman is nearly double that in Taiwan--more than double, actually, as no one in Taiwan provides housing. And Taiwan pays reasonably well, by Asian standards.
You guys have it good. |

You are so right Baz, Very few jobs in such desirable locations pay so well. One is hard pressed to beat 3500$ for a an 80 hour work month.... works out to over 40$ an hour.
Maybe all the grinching one hears from time to time is just a ploy to keep it 'all to ourselves'?

Well, I don't make that much, but I make enough, and I come close to that much when you factor in over-time.
I thought I would have to retire before I could afford to teach someplace that was beautiful, exotic, and simply wonderful. I have found that place now, and I am making a quite nice wage. I have a beautiful house with sweeping views of the mountains, with knock your socks off sunrises and sets.
I paid my dues by working 2 years in the tragic kingdom, but I am now so very happy. I like my work, my students, and my life here.
I planted papaya and coconut trees, as well as gardenias and strawberries in my garden today. My new date palms seem quite happy, and my compost pit has sprouted some nice melons.
It may not be for everyone, but it suits me terrifically! |

Is it still true there is a shortage of teachers? One of the posters above said schools were contacting her to find out if he/she knew of teachers to recommend.
I just received an offer from a recruiter for a position in Oman, but reading the threads tells me there are better offers to be had from being a direct hire. Any suggestions?
I've been offered a position in Saudi Arabia, but haven't heard anything since, so it would probably be wise to keep looking and from what I read here, Oman sounds like a good bet. |

My suggestion is to go to the job fair in Dubai, if you can. Otherwise, plaster the country with your CV. There are 3 universities alone in Nizwa.
I was just reading about how the Sultanate has increased its education budget, and how it expects to employ a lot more expats in the near future. Of course, the majority will be construction workers, etc., from Southeast Asia, but there will some hiring of faculty
I know U Nizwa is planning to be hiring at the Dubai conference. |

Thank you. While Dubai is out of the question as I am in the U.S. and have been unemployed since May, I do still have the internet and can still email my CV. Thanks again. |

Desultude,
Your latest post, the one about a house with a view to the mountains and your own garden, is very alluring, especially for someone who regularly mulls over an idea of moving on to Oman.
I understand that it is Nizwa that has made you a Donna Contenta.
Greetings,

Yes, indeed. Quite content. It is easy to be content at the moment. I'm in a little hotel at the Corniche in Muttrah (the main suq in Muscat). I have three days off, and have some sweet plans.
It isn't perfect (the job, that is) but it is so much better than the last one, and Oman itself is a gem. |

Thank you Desultude.
Though I have Salalah and Buraimi [ on account of the alleged Austrian-German tie of the university there ] on my mind, I may now have three locations to mull over.

ps. I think that if ''the job is not perfect'' it must be somewhere around 9 on the 0-10 scale of job happiness for Khaleeje; truly a cause to consider yourself lucky. Plus the compost pit and strawberries, so very pastoral... |

Are you choosing between the Colleges of Applied Sciences and the University of Nizwa? |

Thank you for asking.
My original choice was Dhofar University in Salalah. I keep thinking about DU, but I have my various reservations about Salalah, which I would need to overcome first.
I also found University of Buraimi interesting, but they seem to have suspended their existence for the time being - their website ceased being responsive.
Your happy post made me aware of Nizwa being an option in Oman too.
I think you have mentioned somewhere Nizwa university, so I assume the university is more commendable.

Probably the biggest advantage is that University of Nizwa does direct hire while the other college uses a recruiter. That said, there haven't been that many complaints about how things are going at that college... unlike some of the other branches.

Actually, the complaints have been about the Nizwa branch of the College of Applied Sciences. I haven't seen many about U Nizwa.
Things are pretty calm and orderly here, and the HOD is a very decent man who cares a lot. The pay is decent, the overtime is available, and I have noticed that personal emergencies are handled in a kind and prompt way- going home for a family illness or death is a given and arrangements are generously made for coverage and time off.
I know I am a bit biased, having come from Saudi Arabia where my life was a living hell, but the general atmosphere at U Nizwa is happy and pleasant, despite a couple of curmudgeons, and I believe it to be a good place to work. My good friend told me today she thinks it is the best job she has had ever, and I can't say that I disagree.
I have heard the complaints about the Colleges of Applied Sciences, and I have a friend working there who has little good to say about it. If you search this site for Dhofar, you will find what is said about that. I had other offers in Oman, and I am glad, really glad, I chose as I did.
That being said, we all have our priorities, and have to make our own choices. |

I should have thanked you earlier, desultude, but wanted your post to resound fully.
Read together with pictures of Nizwa from the internet, it seems safe to apply to.
You mention a pretty view from your house. Does it mean you can afford to rent a house of your own there? Or maybe even that the college offers villas as accomodation for their faculty? Your answer would be truly appreciated, as I am very housing-sensitive type.
