Sorry, that just caught my eye..haven't looked at this thread in while.
Are you saying Walmart fires employees who speak Chinese? This is just confusing. Can you elaborate?
I wasn't aware there were so many ex- Walmart manager-trainees who speak Chinese working here in the Middle Kingdom as directors of study at English schools.  |

China EFL is no different than EFL anywhere.
The amazing thing is how EFL is suddenly legitimate when a few years back people would never admit they were an English teacher. Some great marketing going on by the certificate providers. |

Yes, it's amazing, not that long ago many would have considered EFL teachers as drug addicts and/or child molesters...
A stereotype not so easily dispelled when meeting some who grace the classrooms of China........
There really should be a sticky on how to groom and dress appropriately.  |

Perhaps they were employed by Wal-Mart of China.

Sorry you had such a bad experience. I had a pretty good one and let them know from the get go that I was serious and thorough so they did not even try to take advantage of me.
Just think of them as opportunistic. They show great respect for you when you catch them cheating and if you don't catch them then they just assume you are an idiot and thus should be cheated.
It seems, by your posting, that you were primarily motivated by the money, in which case I can understand why you did not like it very much.
I came for the culture and made the most of my experience. I took piano lessons, learned Chinese chess. did martial arts in the park, visited museums, learned how to manage my time and how to become a better teacher. Well worth it in my opinion. |

Kirkpatrick best of luck to ya. When u r out, u will probably appreciate all of the small things.
I do know a girl here who taught there as well and she absolutely hated china with passion and a year after being back she still cursed the country.
I defended the place, stating that it is not for everyone. And I have now met many Chinese in Canada who curse it here too (but I cant say 'if you dont like it, go home, as they did me in China!!!! I do note politely as I have stated above though)
International life is not for everyone, perhaps you are a small-towner, and that is very important to your local economy too! |

| i don't know what's up with china i worked there in 2006 and i'm looking at going back maybe for the spring/summer, all the jobs are paying about the same as 3 years ago, i don't understand how any job in china teaching pays less than 9000-10000 yuan a month for approx. 25-30 hrs teaching it's insane, i don't undersatand especially now since they pretty much demand the BA how can the compete with korea, by offering people 8000 yuan a month/ |

1) Supply and Demand. People are willing to pay to go to China to teach. People are willing to volunteer. People don't know any better. People don't care.
2) Anyone doing research on Korea might be scared away from the stories they read on message boards about the long hours...
3) China is the new cool place on earth. You can't go a week without seeing the front page of some magazine having China on it. |

8000 a month? Sorry to rain on your parade, but the average salary for a FT is around 4000-5000 for a public university gig. You can get 6000-7000 for a private school, however chances are they will treat you like dirt. |

In another thread you whined about not finding jobs and being stuck with just one offer 'on the burner'.
With those salary expectations of yours you better had to be able to offer them some tangibles... you know such as nuclear physics |
