Well put...on all points. I don't even think about the world-wide recession except on how I'm gonna invest my petro dollars in 12-18 months' time. My lil' fella's already substantial college fund is a-gonna be huge when confidence gets back into the market! Until then, jes' hang on to th' ride!

"Thousands of abandoned cars at Dubai airport"
Has this made it a buyers market? Has anyone noticed a lot of good deals on nice used cars? |

They would be owned by car rental or leasing companies or banks. Not to mention that they don't have procedures or laws in place on how to deal with situations and numbers like this. I suspect that, if true, they will be sitting on impound lots somewhere rotting into the sand.

Those are cars that had been impounded by the police for breaking existing laws.
Cars abandoned at the airport is another issue as these are actually not breaking any law except the unpaid debt once it occurs. The difficulty will be the banks or leasing companies getting them back. Hopefully that issue is being addressed, especially if the problem is a growing one, which I suspect that it is and will be. The economy of Dubai is built on smoke and mirrors. (rather like the international banking system itself)

Don't they have money exchanges in Ras al Kaimah? |
Sure they do. But not one of them will deal with Ethiopian Birr. IN fact after going to dubai, we have concluded that NOT ONE money exchange anywhere in the UAE will convert Ethiopian Birr at all.
Go figure. |
That is not at all surprising. It is illegal to take Ethiopian currency out of Ethiopia. Thus, theoretically, no one outside of Ethiopia would be able to convert Birr. |

| I don't understand. Who cares about Ethiopian beer or whatever the currency is? Malaysian ringgit are (or were) also not convertible, and neither are a number of other currencies. |

No what makes it surprising is that 1. the ethiopian consulate here in Dubai said "no problem, we will help find a place to exchange currency." 2. According to Ethiopian customs, it is not illegal to remove ethiopian birr from the country. 3. Since they searched her bags at least 5 times, and no one said anything, I do believe you may be misinformed.
Which brings me back to my original posting which was to answer a question about why I was looking for money exchangers in Dubai instead of RAK.
Thank you very much.

SNB. I concur. This discussion isn't part of this thread. Someone asked me why I was in Dubai looking for a money exchange. I was posting an answer to that question.
My original point stands though. On a thursday morning, Dubai didn't look anything like a "ghosttown" described in the IHT article. When it takes me 5 hours to get from RAK to Diera to find the money exchange, I would say it isn't "deserted." |

That is what I read in two different guidebooks prior to spending the summer in Ethiopia--that I should not expect to be able to obtain or exchange Birr outside of Ethiopia. I don't really get why you would not just exchange it before you left.
And yes, this is off of the original topic. I doubt it's the first or last time that's ever happened on this forum. |

I stated this once before, she took the cash with her because the ETHIOPIAN CONSULATE/Embassy in dubai said, and I quote "No problem. Bring it with you and we will help you exchange it."
Now from someone who lived there and was told it isn't illegal, I'll take the word from the customs officers in Ethiopia over the guide books.
now we know that the embassy is full of liars and rip offs (they only offered half the exchange rate), and my friend learned a very hard lesson.
p.s. it is interesting how you get bent out of shape when people have answered you, but boy oh boy you can sure go after others. |

Okay, you need to relax. This is an online discussion, not a court proceeding. It does not actually matter, so let's just drop it. |

| As for me, I was just trying to inject a slight bit of humor, since I found the sudden appearance of Ethiopian birr in the thread rather unexpected and humorous. |

SNB.
I concur. When my friend told me she was paid in Ethiopain Beer, I had two thoughts 1. where was this job when I was in my 20's, and 2. Damn that is a funny thing to hvae for currency.
now we have found out that she would be better of if it was Beer, then people might just want it, as opposed to this worthless currency. |
