Then again, when I read the stats for road accidents in the UAE I'm glad that the death toll isn't made a lot worse by drunk drivers!

This is rather naive. As a resident on the UAE for thirteen years, I believe drunk driving is responsible for a fair number of road accidents. Those involved, however, are often local. This uncomfortable little fact just doesn't happen to get reported. I have never obtained a liquor license. Should I be concerned? Maybe. I have always purchased at the Barricuda in Umm al Qawain, and, ot a lesser extent, at the fairly respectable wine shop in Ras al Khaimah. Both establishements do not require a license. Am I running a risk driving back to my place with a case of wine in the back of my car? Yes. Am I concerend? Yes. Will this prompt me to obtain a license in Sharjah, where, by the way, a non-Muslim can obtain a license to purchase outside the emirate for home consumption? No.

I always take my dog with me when I go to the Baracuda. I figure the policeman who asks me to open the boot will be rewarded in heaven by catching me out. However, as I have a number of Sharjah policemen in my classes - who have been helpful in various situations in the past - I'm not running much of a risk by not having an alcohol permit. I'm not saying they're doing anything illegal, but they are helpful in translating Arabic to Engish for me.

There have been schemes run by non Gulf Arabs trying to "intimidate" Westerners leaving the various bottle shops, and some have been stymied by those who have wasta (students who are attending evening classes who are also policemen) - it's well worth the money to get the alcohol permit in Sharah if only for the entertainment value when you go home.

No I'm not kidding. I wish I was....

Look outside your window, and you'll see a woman walking past every ten or fifteen days. No, I didn't type days by mistake.

Last time I went out to a bar- there were over forty men hanging around, and not a single unattached female in sight.

Ah... yes... there is the number problem for men. But considering how many are dating, I guess you are not looking in the right places. (on the street and bars not being primo locations for finding dates anyway)

I have always advised people that the Gulf is not the place to look for Mr or Ms Right, but some have succeeded. Laughing

Dear veiledsentiments,
Ms Right is highly unlikely to be found there, but there are plenty of Ms Takes available.
Regards,
John

I know plenty of people who have found a partner here - at church, at a Pool Party at a hotel, at work, at Natural History Group, at a hotel health club, over the internet, at the AmDram group. And in a bar.

In my experience teaching EFL abroad in my younger days, any place with a large concentration of expats is bound to lead to a lot of romantic liaisons. Sadly (or not), most don't last past the next trip home...
