| I was thinking to show up for class one day wearing a Kiss mask and playing "Iron Man" really loud on a boom box on my shoulder. |

| I always wondered how they got around playing the National Anthem without provoking a general massacre...or, for that matter...finding KSA Nationals who actually knew hot to play a musical instrument. |

Dear Maude,
You know - I'd never heard the National Anthem
"National Anthem Lyrics
Hasten to glory and supremacy!
Glorify the Creator of the heavens
And raise the green, fluttering flag,
Carrying the emblem of Light!
Repeat - God is greatest!
O my country,
My country, may you always live,
The glory of all Muslims!
Long live the King,
For the flag and the country!"

But I can see/hear now that this wasn't a missed "peak experience."
Regarding music and Islam, this is interesting:

Went to a new hip restaurant today ("Black Moon Cafe"), and guess what the first song was after prayer was over... Barbie Girl, by Aqua!!! That's the epitome of 1990s "bubblegum pop"... yes, that's a music genre (look it up on wikipedia!).
That was followed by several Lebanese (Arabic) pop songs, and then a whole album by some RnB artist! The horror... where are the "Holy Men" with the sticks and short thobes? |

Hey Trap,

Is this by your standards or the local in place to be?
You don't have to answer this Trap, it's a rhetorical question. Also any other sort of sarcastic or snide remark is also not welcome.

| Personally, I'm not a hip guy - I prefer breast or drumstick. |

Isn't there a forum that caters to math teachers in Saudi?
Why do we have to be subjected to your sometimes cold mathamatical replies TRAP?
We are all human and do make multiple mistakes. Even I the great Cornelius doth unto thineself great and terrible transgressions. But I share something in common with my other colleagues here. A BA in Eng. Lit. or TESL certification or both.

Lord, does that mean we lose 007, too?
Alas - "Where be these enemies? Capulet! Montague!
See, what a scourge is laid upon your hate,
That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love!
And I, for winking at your discords too,
Have lost a brace of kinsmen: all are punish'd." |

I may be biased towards 007 as I am a cat father myself. 007 has always been nice to me so I'm nice to him/her. So there na na na na naaa.

Well, I am 'he' not 'she', and I am nice to all human beings and animals (except crocodiles), regardless of race, ethnicity, eyes colour, speciality (English vs Math), etc, etc, ... |

Speaking of unpleasant animals, even nicer than the lack of muzak is the rarity of canines in KSA. Compared to the small Central American nation I now call home, where the evil beasts run in mangy packs attacking garbage bags and lamp posts, here dogs are such a novelty that the whole family feel obliged to point out any we see, much like camel sightings were recorded in our first months.
The resulting abundance of cats is a minor problem, as apart from having babies all around the house and pissing on the aloe vera plant in the garden (since moved to a more secure location) cats are fairly clean, tidy and quiet beasts.
Statistically speaking, I don't believe crocodiles are a problem, as long as you don't go swimming (or fishing) with them. |

According to al-Salih, Muhammad (PBUH) once said "Angels do not follow a caravan that is accompanied by either a bell or a dog".
I guess that rules out Iditarod activity. |

Well, English languge is not the owner of any people or race, it is not the language of Infidels, it is the language of GOD and a gift to his mankind (native and non-native!).
Music in Islam:
It is clear that the religious texts that stand as a basis for those who maintain that singing is haram are either ambiguous or inauthentic. None of the hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is valid as evidence on the judgment of prohibition. Moreover, all these hadiths are declared weak by the followers of Ibn Hazm, Malik, Ibn Hanbal, and Ash-Shafi`i.
In his book, Al-Ahkam, Al-Qadi Abu Bakr Ibn Al-`Arabi says, None of the hadiths maintaining that singing is prohibited are considered authentic (by the scholars of the Science of Hadith Methodology). The same view is maintained by Al-Ghazali and Ibn An-Nahwi in Al-`Umdah. Ibn Tahir says, Not even a single letter from all these Hadiths was proved to be authentic.
Ibn Hazm says, All the hadiths narrated in this respect were invented and falsified.
