Not sure whether quoting oneself is quite 'comme il faut', but I remain true to my word and did some research yesterday on the occasion of the Southampton-Leeds game.
An assortment of mature graduates, local taxi driver and others all agreed on the plural as their common usage. The recent English graduate with 1st class honours perhaps betrayed her lack of interest in football by introducing a dissenting note regarding possible correct usage and the theoretical underpinnings. Nevertheless her undoubted expertise was ignored and a satisfactory consensus achieved.
