I never worked at the Gulag but knew one or two people who did. Too bad it's closed shop. Lang Sols is making a mess and a lot of money in the magic kingdom - how are they doing in Doha?

Yes, the end of an era. All my good years were spent at the Gulag. I worked in a few other places afterwards but nothing as friendly as the Gulag - teachers and students. Lang Sols is just a teaching mill.

I'm obviously kind of late to this discussion, but who here was Mark Linname?

This employer has been around for many years, and the information was passed on to ex-employees who may have known this person. Whether he ever posted here is moot I would think.

Thanks. I thought it was one of our long time posters at Dave's that I hadn't heard about yet.

Wow great to be back in Qatar for a few days. The wife and babe have gone home to the US for Thanksgiving and Christmas and so I've joined up with an ex-Gulag buddy to reminisce about the old days. Qatar sure has changed in the few short years since I left. Amazing!

The Gulag really is a thing of the past - good times, good buddies, good people, bad management, bad salaries, lousy accomodation but basically a place where you met interesting people. I miss some of that but in my new role as dad and spouse, I don't have much time for the social life I used to have here in Q and at the Gulag.

It was a good time. Direct-hire is now a small time operation and those Gulagers who managed to get onto the system just want to hang in and keep their job. Don't blame them with the economy the way it is.

Good lucky guys.

Ras Abu Aboud, known in song and story as "The Gulag".

In my own personal opinion, "The Gulag" makes this particular teaching venue sound far too merry.

"Extermination Camp" with the instructors being the exterminees, would be much closer to the truth.

Why?

1. The management treat you like highly disposable labour.

2. The local population (trainees) treat you with far, far, less than respect.

3. There are mass executions (sackings) on a regular basis.

4. You cannot legally leave without permission from your overlords, and that includes both the camp and the country.

If you want to hand your life over to QP who can sack you at will, or hold you in the country on a whim, then Qatar is the place to go.

If you don't fancy the above, then you might want to look elsewhere.
