my sources tell me that the teachers who worked summer school in July havent been paid yet and will be paid later on this month or next month

That's correct. AND the reason being???? Some of the senior officials at AlObeikan are on vacation. Therefore, the necessary signatures needed can not be obtained.

Let them eat cake!

Oh... I forgot. This is KSA. In that case, let them sip qahwah (coffee) and eat dates until we get back!

Well it's been about a week so far and I have heard nothing from Bell. No PJO. No contract. Dead silence. Has anyone heard anything at all.

Here we go again with the shotgun weekends again. Another four days of silence.

pay special attention to the small print at the bottom of the job ad lifted from tefl.com on page 2 of this thread:

Let no one be under the impression that Bell disappears. They don't. The Bell/AlObeikan management is intertwined. AlObeikan uses Bell to do their dirty work when they don't want to be bothered or are too incompetent to do otherwise.

If Bell is just the recruiting agency, then why do they make hiring/firing decisions once the teacher is inside KSA?

Bell even has a Human Resources manager that is involved in payroll decisions and together with the AlObeikan accounting staff came up with some 'creative' accounting techniques throughout the last academic year.

The best thing for anyone who is joining or has joined the Bell/AlObeikan shady operation is to know the Saudi Labor Law and stick to it when handling disputes. You will soon discover if you start quoting law or even have the audacity to seek legal counsel, they back off. I wonder why???

I was informed today that the first day of class is supposed to be on Oct 26th. But those of us who are returning are expected to be there on Sept 5 if we want our salary for that month. Apparently, our Eid vacation will be from Sept 17 to Oct 25. Hard to believe, since that would be a 5 week holiday.

On another note, Bell/ORD/KSU have come out with another brilliant policy for 2009/10. It concerns housing. They have said they will provide only single females with accommodation. If there is space, they will offer families with accommodation. The single men have been given 3 days to vacate their apartments upon return to make room for the single females. Oh, and get this ladies, there will be a matron in charge of your building and to save you from the sins of the flesh. Everyone else will receive a housing allowance equivalent to 25% of your basic salary, even though Saudi Labor Law says otherwise.

As usual, incorrect info was given about the starting dates. I apologize for spreading it. The latest update given by the Bell/KSU Newsletter states the following:

�Work in September will concentrate on induction and teacher training. Teacher training will concentrate on self-learning, pronunciation (sound and sentence level), and exploiting textbooks, especially listening and reading tasks. There will also be 2 days of training on the new Touchstone materials, especially adapted to suit Saudi cultural mores. We also hope to establish some teacher advisory groups, and recruit �lead teachers� to help the Supervisors (new name for �Coordinators�). All this will take place between 5 & 16 Sept inclusive. As this will be during Ramadan, working will be 0900 to 1500 only. After work on the 16th the Eid holiday will start and staff will be expected to report back on Saturday 26 September, for preparation for the placement test (including a speaking component), which will be on Monday 28th. Teaching will start on Saturday 3rd October.�

It's hard to believe that one day will be enough to placement test more than 2000 students on the female side, and more than 3000 students on the male side. But Bell/ORD/KSU have a habit of believing the impossible to be possible.

So if a teacher doesnt show up until late September, he doesnt get any pay for September? Or pro-rated or what?

No it doesn't; in fact I suspect it says 2 months salary a year, not three, though I've been paid both. And it is legal to pro-rata housing allowance every month, though an immense problem as landlords insist on six months up front, and of course you'll need to furnish the flats.

If a teacher doesn't show up they have already been told to look for a job elsewhere. Although... in reality they (Bell/AlObeikan) are probably bluffing as teachers who were previously told that in past years were 'begged' (politely) to come back because they are short staffed. I wonder why???
