Do you have any evidence the guy is being tortured? Thought not.

And I have more sympathy for somebody caught drunk driving in the West than I do in KSA. The legal penalties are clearer in KSA and all you have to do to avoid them is call for a taxi.

We're talking about a country that beheads people in public.

I can take a taxi here in the states as well.

Specifically, how are the penalties in the KSA "clearer?"

I'm with SJ on this one...

Are there any expats living in Saudi that are not aware that there is a prohibition on alcohol? Everyone knows that the penalty for drunk driving or drunkenness in public are higher in the Gulf than in the US, and Saudi is worst of all. So... he was an idiot and a fool and he is paying the price. He'll get no sympathy from me.

It's easy to see why the Saudis got so ticked off at the western powers when they arrived during the 90-91 shenanigans. I can see those Saudi guys walking/driving by the US bases and staring at the women soldiers dressed in their camo outfits, driving vehicles, et al. Being there and watching the looks on Saudi faces when western male soldiers saluted higher-ranking female soldiers would have been the bomb.

Then, you woulda got a hoot driving around the Riyadh AB perimeter road watching saudi military spaced out about 6 or so meters lining the road under the sweltering August heat.

Their purpose? They were there performing guard functions for yet another State visit of then-Secretary of State Madeline Albright...an American Jewish WOMAN.

Yup, that's what they were ordered to do. Laughing

NCTBA

P.s.- Oh! They were a happy-looking bunch as well! Laughing

As opposed to one that electrocutes them in front of closed-circuit television.

I wish I could have been there to and take photos Rigel when the bases were still there, your comments right on the spot but then again I did travel around that area and gave and showed respect and got the same back, even as a woman.

By the way they do respect gutsy ladies Very Happy

I'm sure the Saudis, like all of us, are in awe of a nation which, unlike many Muslim and/or non 'Western" nations, has never had a female head of state.[/list]

Dear Cleo,
Nor, for that matter, a Jewish one. However, we do now have a president with African ancestry, so shway, shway, some progress is being made.
Regards,
John

My WESTERN administrator had a come to issa meeting with one of my colleagues to convince her to be happy. She also got emails and direct orders from her to change her attitude and be happier.

Actually all your presidents have had fairly recent African ancestry, quips about Neanderthals notwithstanding.
