Becoming a licensed K-12 teacher in Canada is quite a complex process, I have a friend who almost had a mental breakdown trying to get through the entire thing at age 32 (the amount of class preparation/assignments required leaves you with little time to actually work and pay bills).

I guess it depends on which province. I did my teacher certification in Ontario. The actual classwork was easy. The practicums were hard because they expected you to do things that in the real world no teacher really does: detailed lesson plans detailed to the minute what you are going to teach and WHY. The program is only 8 months too.

I also worked part-time while doing the program. That was pretty hard, but possible. Oh and I was 35 when I entered the program. No breakdown for me, but a member of my cohort did have a breakdown.

The two MA/Credential programs I am most interested in in California both state explicitly on their department web pages that candidates should not expect to have any time to work outside of the program during its duration, so essentially I will be looking at accruing debt (bills) while in the program, if that is what I eventual decide to do.

What I see as one (very) attractive benefit of this is the speed of the process. Alternative certification routes look like torture (to me), as I feel I also want to earn an MA relatively (very) quickly. A LOT of work (credential, MA, student teaching) over a very short time. I imagine it will entail an 80+ hour a week commitment. Having an outside job would indeed precipitate a breakdown during that 9-12 months.

I wouldn't advise having a part-time job if you are doing an intense certification program. I did it because I really needed the cash. I still had to borrow 10k in addition to that.

Many of my cohort members were coaching+working+doing the regular load. I guess at 22-23 it is possible to sleep 3-4hrs a night, but I need at least 6hrs of sleep a night.
