About the only "advantage" of these "new visas" that I can see is that you can leave whenever you want - no exit visa from the government obtained through your employer needed (since, legally, you can't BE employed.)
But the "advantage" only comes in handy if the job you've landed is SO very bad that you can't stand it. And, of course, you'd be paying your own airfare.
Regards,
John

Those are very good points. In addition to that, if you are on one of those visas and want to leave your job, do it quietly. Arrange a new job and get your visa changed in Bahrain. Just don't let your current sponsor know about it. This is only for those on a Business/Government Visa.

Experience is a harsh teacher. Some of the veterans here have been warning for a while that teachers should not come to KSA on these "business visas". Come on a regular visa where you will be an employee with an Iqama.

Coming on a business visa is illegal and will cause newcomers nothing but problems.

Yeah, Scot. But warn as we like, we stand the chance of being attacked by newbies who already know everything. Because, we...er...are afraid of losing out jobs the "new Turks"?

Besides that, whatever happened to Kalima Shahada? Silence is golden.

So just to reiterate to all those thinking of going to KSA to work. DO NOT go there on anything but an Employment Visa. It is illegal to work there on a Business or Government Visa. You will not receive an Iqama with a Business or Government Visa. That mean, you CAN NOT get a bank account, transfer money, get a post-paid SIM card, and many other things you'll like to do if you're working there.

So the recruiters' standard retort

We'll change it to a work visa within 1-3 months

is complete bunk?

Yeah, In general you have to leave the country to get your visa changed. It also requires verification of degrees, medical exams in triplicate, criminal police reports, a contract, and so much more. All of this is usually done in your home country. I heard some rumors that it can be changed in Bahrain, but I don't think its common. So I really don't think they are going to send you back to your home country to get a legit Employment Visa.

Dear tacomaboywa,

Well, since all these "new visas" seem to have popped up this year, I hope that those who went to Saudi on them will post here when they can to keep everyone advised on how it's working out - or not.

Regards,
John

My recruiter, Skyline, originally said I would come on a visitor visa, come back home to get the work visa, then come back. Then my employer decided to go ahead and take the time to get the work visa. I am so glad I did not come on a visitor visa. I am awaiting my work visa at present.

Yeah, once you're in country there working for them they will be less inclined to send you back to get the real work visa. There may be a few employers that will do it, but most probably won't. People should try to avoid that sort of situation.

Is there anyone out there who arrived on non Employment Visa and later got it changed successfully?

I am pleased I requested a Work Permit (not a Temporary WP) from my employer although I had to return home to fulfill the requirements. It took 4 weeks for all my paperwork and checks to be completed and only 1 week for the Visa to be processed. I have just received my e-ticket and I leave for the KSA early next week.
There have been a couple of minor (at the time, frustrating) inconveniences along the way but the overall process was straightforward.
The prospect of working in any country without a full Work Permit fills me with dread.
