Dear elamericano,
And yet - quotes usually have quotation marks:
meritocrats: A group of leaders or officeholders selected on the basis of individual ability or achievement.
But I'm sorry to have confused you.
Regards,
John |

Silly me... when I saw the title of this thread I thought it would be something about why we tend to bicker with each other on the forum.
Then I started reading, and as it turns out, the thread was actually far more interesting than an analysis of conflict on the forum.
Then, on page 2, it just degenerated into good ol' conflict on the forum.

Dear denise,
Conflict? Not so - just a good-natured exchange of ideas.

I'm glad you see it that way! That's a very positive spin to give it.

Why do we fight and bicker at any level?
Fear and ego...well just fear really. |

I say Ego comes 1st.
Why? Because the ego fears inferiority.
Nice observation jdl. |

It's that age-old question:
Which comes first? The chicken or the ego? |

My wise caretaker says you should all be fired for endless pedantic squabbling and veering off topic. But my boss is delighted, as now he can reduce salaries further without fear of facing a united front. I guess I'll be waiting for the inevitable fallout in my DOS office, but this time I'm ready for you... ... ...

That's still not in the dictionary. |

I thought you told me in another thread that you often hired experienced people? This statement seems to directly conflict with that, unless the hiring procedure has changed dramatically since you started that job.

Sounds like the nail hit on the head for many "teachers" in Japan.
Many get in with no teaching license or certification, let alone a degree or experience. They often come to do sightseeing or date, and expect money for sitting and chatting with students as a means to pay for that. Many forget they are in a foreign country with foreign business customs. |
I guess if you were talking about language schools, that would be right for many of them, including those outside of Japan.
Getting back to the main thrust of the thread, I don't think that educational institution employees are any more or less argumentative than employees elsewhere. Having worked in government and corporate, it just seems like a lot more of the same. There are always people who will complain about that which they can't control, assuming the owners or managers can do it and should change it because they can.
There are always power struggles in bureaucratic structures, it's nothing new. How they manifest themselves and how they're handled tells you more about the people you work with than anything else. |

and the devil appears...
The OP opened with the phrase 'many moons ago'. Places of work change, so does the quality of staff intake. Where is the conflict there? But feel free to contradict anything written on the thread. As has been remarked, this only shows how we love to be disagreeable ad nauseum. Not that I'm not an offender myself... |

I believe the OP said he's 35 in another thread, so I'm not sure what 'many moons have passed' would refer to .
Perhaps he can enlighten us . |
