Hey, but you WILL be dancing.

OK, one more time I feel compelled (Stop me before I do it again) to note that just because an individual has a bad (or a good) experience in one place, guess what - that does NOT mean that every other individual will have the same.
Believe it or not, I actually had a GOOD experience in Saudi Arabia. But I am most certainly NOT laboring under the delusion that just because MY time there was satisfying, everyone else's will be, too.
In fact, being realistic, I'd say that the likelihood of that being the case is
NOT good.
But it all depends almost completely on two factors:

1. Where you work

2. Who you are

and we're all different.

Regards,
John

Well John, you are a member of homo superior after all... Wink

Dear Deicide,

Save his soul??? Strange phrase from a militant atheist. I believe the practitioners of the Inquisition claimed the same motive

Have you ever considered becoming a Jesuit?

Regards,
John

Muchas gracias. Entiendo. Smile
I appreciate all sides of the argument. But I think that I will be pursuing it. Couldn't think of a better time to see the world. Everybody is in a desperate situation with loans, mortgages, family, jobs etc. If I am young, free and single I should prove it right? Laughing

Fixed.

We do have a soul; it's just mechanical, made up of many tiny parts and is not immortal or immaterial. Modern neuroscience has more or less proven this.

You shouldn't take me too seriously...at least sometimes you shouldn't. It's just an internet forum after all. Maybe this Lord of Eire will have a vastly different experience to mine but one ought not discount the negative experiences people have had in the 'TEFL' industry. Ultimately in life, everything is a business with a profit/loss margin, even interpersonal human relationships. Now, I am not happy about that but it's a fact and I just see TEFL losing in the cost/efficiently model but that is just me; I am after all just a crazy old man.

Crazy old men congregate on internet forums. (I am, in fact, not that old. But old will happen naturally, inshallah. Crazy I've been working hard at for years.)

We're getting off topic here, so I'll be brief. But one thing I'm realizing, reading this thread, is that there are so many factors in how anything turns out that it's really hard to generalize.

I've had good luck and a nice-ish life these last years. (Touch wood.) But if I say that this is because TEFL is a wonderful career choice, I fear Deicide may explode, probably rightly.

On the other hand, there are plenty of people around who have had a rough time. Does this mean that EFL is a rotten career choice?

There are a lot of factors. Attitude. Training. Blind luck. Karma. Right place at the right time. Work-ethic. Personal charm. Kismet.

EFL can be a very positive career choice.

It can be a very negative one.

Keep control of the factors you can control.

Good luck with the rest.

Justin

Get qualified, either an MA or license, depdning on what age group you want to teach.

Stay at schools for at elast a year.Make conncections, they're gold. There ARE good jobs out there, but they're usually not advertised, it's all about luck, conections, experience, and qualificatosn.

TEFL is ok, for now and I've been doing it for 7 years. I have an MA in TEFL and will be getting one in Applied LInguistics. That being said, somewhere done the line I would ike to get an MBA and do something different, what I orginally studied.

Look at it this way, most peopel change careers about 6 times in their lives. So if you don't like teahing, look for something else.

It is an experience and a way to see things that friends and family have only read abuout in books and by living in a foreign country, you'll experience different things than a tourist.

Yes exactly. This is what I want. I need to focus on the experience of living in a different country (for this is what I want) and not on the draw backs of having to look for jobs etc. If I am persistent I will hit something hopefully. As I said before, I have no intention of using TEFL as a career but merely as a vehicle to seeing new cultures and people. Thanks.

Dear Carmo85

When boyhood's fire was in my blood I read of ancient freeman, in Greece and Rome who bravely stood, 300 men and 3 men.

You too can be of heroic stock. Go and travel. See the world. TEFL can open those doors. You are young and brave, yes? There is nothing stopping you. If you are just looking for a year or two of adventure, then go for it. Plenty of naysayers at home and here will tell you it is all folly, and they may well be right. But you are the one who can decide that after the fact, when you are reflecting on your lost youth later. Just do it! Now!

Go n-irigh an bthar leat‎, a mhac!

Sasanach: a Celtic corruption of Saxon. We covered that in Slavonic class, for some reason. Top class intelligence training this side of the Wall.

Still, no reason not to go and see the world, no matter what the Saxons say.

I couldn't care less where anybody is from, this is why I am traveling. An open mind is sort of a requirement for this job I think!
