What's wrong with being into those things? I don't think it's any worse than the ones who come over here for the women. And then there are those that are coming for the money.

There's a difference between "being into them" and being insane.
I use the term "otaku" in the negative sense. I'm meaning the people that are into it and nothing else. The loonie fanboys that think Japan will be something or anything like the fantasy they have built up in their minds. The ones that give off the scary vibe. The ones that speak manga Japanese and can't speak in real Japanese. The ones you just don't feel comfy having around children. The ones that are still going through the smelly teenage boy phase, even though they're 24.
People who happen to have that as an interest are neither here nor there. In the context of Japan, if they're interested in the teaching side of things seriously then it's probably good because (depending on what they like (most of them don't understand that what's popular outside Japan isn't the same as inside Japan (Vampire D, anyone?))) it gives them a potential in with their students. That's good. But the real nutcase fanboys that keep applying to get into JET and can make it to the interview stage? They have to be kept out. For everyones sake IMO. YMMV. |

In that case, I agree but think that it's not just the fanboys who should be kept out.
I had the pleasure of meeting a few JETs at the JET xmas party who gave off that scary/creepy vibe and none of them were anime, manga, etc loving otakus that you are describing. They were just more of the fresh faced uni grads who obviously came here to drink, party and get laid.
One of them actually joked about how he was still very young and that many of his senior high girls are fell in his strike range... I don't know or care whether he was serious or not; there are simply some things you should never say even in jest to people you barely know. |
