I do know one person who has got an offer and is waiting for a visa... and another who has been told that he is still being considered. They are only offering 6 month contracts (as a contractor) with the possibility of a renewal to a regular contract later. I get the impression that they haven't quite figured out what they need and are interviewing people with outstanding CVs with tons of experience to come in and help them figure it out.

They lost part of their housing in the floods and storms and these teachers will be put into a hotel in Jeddah. They are hoping to have the housing back up and ready in about 6 months. I know that all of you are eager to know the pay offered, but I do not have permission to share that number. But, I will say that it is a daily rate and it is the highest rate that I have seen for a TEFL position in the Gulf university systems. It is a total package for now and you pay your own medical coverage and housing with a low negotiated rate at the hotel... I think they fly you there and out... single status.

Supposedly there are 4 positions... that's all I've got...

Definitely go to the website and read the complete description of the job. One change that I notice is that applicants are no longer required to be a US citizen.

It sounds like they expect you to earn that large salary. It says to expect to work evenings and weekends. Classroom teaching will be the least of the duties.

I visited KAUST recently but only to stay with students there so I have only the students' perspective:

It was heavenly!

You can almost forget that you're in KSA. It makes Aramco (Khobar) look like a dump and has the makings of a 'real' university. All the students I met had gone to decent universities such as Cornell, and quite a few were arranging Summer placements at Berkeley, among other places. I also met researchers making TV documentaries. It was abaya free and very international (so it surprises me a little that they're going to have ESL instead of taking the ready trained students).

I can't tell you much about the teaching side of it, but the only negative I saw (which is actually quite big) was that it's 80km (100 sar) from Jeddah, so you would be living in an albeit rather big, goldfish bowl.

Well, if you are Chinese, Hungarian, or Moroccan, and you studied in your home country and in your native language, you could definitely do with some help in English.

Based on the advertisement that Trap posted above, it looks like their EFL department plans to be very individually targeted. It won't be like the normal Gulf university with a group of homogeneous low level Foundations classes where all are Arabic speakers. I don't believe that their intent is to have any EFL classes, but to do things on a tutorial, self-access basis.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't change eventually as they try to expand their student base.

I wonder if anyone from within KSA can read this b/c this forum has been blocked. Anyway, if you can read or know, please answer.

I want to work as an EFL instructor @ KAUST but I can't find any EFL-type jobs in the job listing in their website. Are there any or are they buried? How can I apply @ KAUST anyway?

Thanks. Im

A mere 80Km/100SAR bus trip from Jeddah and you can even apply in person! I've always believed that a well-greased hand-delivered CV is the front door to the land of opportunity Razz

I replied on your other thread. KAUST's contractor (don't know who this is now) hires few teachers (2 or 3) on business visas, large salary - no benefits, room in a hotel in Jiddah. And you better have a VERY impressive CV... MA... 10+ years of experience... strong materials development, preferably content directed for more advanced students than the usual ME classes... many Chinese students.
