projectrook, thanks for your answer. Interestingly enough, I make an almost identical commute from a Chuo line station to Kanda several days a week. Will keep an eye out for people with more than one keitai!

I used to teach private lessons to two women who worked as hostesses in Ginza- they had two keitais, one for their friends and a separate number (and name) to give to their bar's customers. People have different reasons for wanting two I suppose, but I can't imagine them saving much.

I know a few hosts in Shibuya that also have 2 keitai..one for customers and one for personal of course. Hosts make me smile.

I talked to my friends who work in the cell phone industry.
There are cases where people have 2... usually for business (office workers or the hostess workers as mentioned for example).

On other occasions, families pay for their kids to have a cell phone to only call them, while the other is for friends, etc. Some boys/girls occasionally get phones just for use with their gf or bf (just that one person I mean).

In the case that the family pays for the cell phone for example, it is cheaper for the kid, because their family pays off the plan.

However, owning 2 cell phones from 2 companies is never outright cheaper in total price than owning 1 cell phone, because both cell phones must be paid for, as well as set up with basic plans on top of what the caller wants.

That being said, some people do spoil themselves or their parents spoil them, so it does happen. I laughed at the idea of having a personal phone to only call a gf or bf.

It can make perfect sense to have a family phone + a sweetheart phone.

The keitai companies offer various deals that encourage you to go with the same company as the people you contact. So if your family is on a Softbank family contract, and you need to stay in touch with them a lot, it makes sense to have a Softbank phone. If your sweetheart is with Docomo, it might make sense to also have a Docomo phone.

Even if it is more expensive to have 2 phones, someone might choose to keep the second phone because of all the expensive contractual lock-ins.

By the way, why hasn't anyone mentioned Willcom? They are by far the most reasonable phone company. The only downside is that coverage is poorer, but that's not likely to be an issue if, say, you live in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Perhaps Willcom seeking bankruptcy protection has something to do with it.

Yes. That would explain it.
