I know what you mean. Today, I bought a Dorian from a good natured beetle nut chewing vendor. I asked him to cut the meaty fruit out of it for me. When he cut, separated and picked out the fleshy smelly meat from it, I tried not to utter a single word to him, since every time that he talked, little red drops would splatter out of his toothless mouth. Needless to say, I washed some of the Dorian after getting home before I put it into my salivating mouth. Man, I just love that fruit. Razz Laughing

You guys crack me up, because it's so true. If only I knew how to say "say it, don't spray it" in Min Nan or Mandarin.

By the way, zipper, I can't stand durian myself; I don't know how you do it...blecch. I do like chou doufu, though, so I guess to each his own Smile

Note to self -- don't say anything disparaging about Pinoys when zipper is in the room. Laughing

Many moons ago when I first encountered this strange and exotic prickly shelled fruit, I found its odor offensive and repulsive (often defined erroneously by some of the lower order epicureans as malodorous in the chefs halls of fame); that is offensive and repulsive until I tried it. Lo and behold, I fell in love with the foul stinking stuff. It is the Sumatran and Bornean Orangutans favorite munchies down there in Indonesia. It tastes similar to vanilla pudding to me. Taiwan is a big Durian consumer market where voracious consumers pay big money for it; whereas it is very cheap where it is grown and harvested.

Have you ever tried it?

I love Chou doufu myself. I mean, I could enjoy taking a bath in it. I must have been a skunk in my previous life.

PS: Pssst! You caught my spelling on the Durian. Good thing, because I wouldnt want to offend Helen. Laughing

Cheers!

12. When people prepare food or hongcha while either smoking or chewing betel nuts...

13. Large packs of constantly barking, angry "community dogs" that aren't on leashes.

I liked choudoufu for a while, but I started to eat it at every meal (when I didn't know how to order very much) and it kind of lost its appeal...

1. The pollution.
2. The difficulty in getting a "green card".
3. The hard time non-whites have.
4. The insane pre-occupation with face.
5. The permissible level of physical discipline applied by parents.
6. The incessant smoking. Get cancer and die, already!
7. The lack of customer focus in health care.
8. The cockroaches-in-peapod way people jam in cars and motorcycles when parking.
9. The dismal, moronic TV shows (on the flip side, they make me spend more time reading).
10. The politics.

Only ten? Damn, I could go on all day...

1. People who can't speak a word of English telling me how to teach it.
2. The greasy, salty slop that passes for food.
3. The passive-aggressive culture.
4. The children (babies).
5. The parents (bigger babies).
6. The grandparents (ignorant trolls).
7. White face = American.
8. Betelnut-chewing retards.
9. The noise.
10. The pollution.

1 Excessive translation, even when the translation makes no sense/ translates an item not known in the west. "I had 'ants on the tree' for dinner today."
2 White face= cannot speak Chinese
3 Crappy driving
4 Lack of honesty
5 Traffic
6 Crowding
7 Unsightly cityscapes
8 Winters in northern Taiwan
9 Random "HALLO!" screamed at you by losers
10 Lack of public holidays

You mean "ants on a log," I believe. Raisins on peanut butter smeared on a stick of celery. I had that sometimes when I was going to preschool in Virginia.

I agree with the remainder, though.

What I most liked about Taiwan was the delicious food, and what I most disliked was the pollution from all of the motorcycles that made it hard
to breathe when walking to and from the school where I was teaching. I could see why so many people were covering their nose and mouth.
