extradoss i do appreciate your comments about not all teachers that get a qualificaiton make good teachers, and i would say a few, not equal number of teachers, have wandered into the profession and become really good. usually they get as much training as possible and read a lot on the internet or teaching books. motivation and passion seem to be key ingrediants. however, it is difficult to accurately assess a person's ability unless u have all the pedagogical knowledge that comes with getting a degree in educaton, whether it is Bed, PGCE, or Masters. Distance education is becoming a more viable option for those who want to continue living abroad but get properly educated at the same time. i think those who put their students first are willing to make the necessary sacrifices to give their students the best education possible.

Let me make a few points with regard to this trained/certified teacher discussion. While taking the PGCSE route [for UK citizens] is the way to go with regards providing yourself with a degree of professionalism/awareness of teaching methodologies and practices and, of course enhancing your employable status-'doing' the course does not necessarily a 'good teacher make'!

Agree with you totally, but it does make you a much better teacher! The PGCE isn't just gaining an awareness of methodologies, you have to consistently prove that you meet a list of more than 30 standards that indicate you know what you are doing and are committed to inclusive education.

There are many lousy teachers in the UK education system [I can remember quite a few] who just don't give a toss about the student's education.

I agree, and these are the bitter teachers who spend their lives complaining and moaning about lives when they should really be doing something else.

Equally there are many 'unqualified' people who maybe have drifted into teaching through their wanderings-found that they have an aptitude for the profession and do an excellent job here. Would they benefit from the training?-sure but this option is not always open to them for various reasons.

Agree with this too although there are various ways into teaching these days and training is always an option if you have the will to do it. If you really are a good teacher then you can find a job with someone who will help you get that training.

Fishy's belief that all those 'trained and certified people' are passionate and committed teachers, while the ex-language mill teacher who moves into a Nat+ setup is imply in it for the money seems a little judgmental to me....

That's not my belief at all, in my previous post I tried to explain this. I'm just trying to say to those who want to move into formal primary or secondary teaching that you should get qualified because it ill make you a better teacher and will increase your earning potential as a result of being a much better teacher, this is the topic of the thread.
