| I know what the students pay for a year here at my school. There are about 60 students. When you do the math with the number of classes and hours of work expected, I am making about 60 rmb per class!! This is ridiculous! When I can go out on the street and tutor on my own for 120 to 200rmb per class! |
I am not in China but just my 2 cents. I ended up in a less than perfect situation hour wise for my first overseas gig but that was my failure in asking enough questions prior to signing.
Now to the above, I was teaching some specialty classes this summer and caught wind of what students were paying, when the class was at its max (12 students) the take for my school was easily 2 weeks salary for me. Of course I started doing all the math in my head of what I could make on my own. However, I have learned that one on one students sometimes don't show, since I am a salaried employee I get paid regardless. That is nice for me since I am not "set up" to survive on my own yet, especially regarding the issue of WP and visa support.
I am in my first overseas position and to caveat this post my girlfriend is a native of where I am at so I had incentive to tough it out. What is good is that I have been asked back for another year and was able to demand some changes in the contract, we are in negotiations now. I am more the wiser and benefited from the experience as difficult as it was sometimes. |
