Dear Vertical,
"BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER"
What?? You mean they've stopped stocking toilet paper in every supermarket and corner store?

Hi Johnslat,
the corner cafe does stock packs of 10 rolls. But when you arrive at 4am, they're not open yet.
My point though, is that there is a distinct absence of toilet paper in the toilets wherever you go here.
Strange thing though , every toilet has a shower and some even have a whole bath. (Even my flat doesn't have a bath! )
Don't tell me what that shower is for!! I think I'd rather remain ignorant for fear of the picture an explanation might conjure up.

Most of the world lives without toilet paper. That is why running water is provided in toilets in KSA. It is for washing your ****** after you have a *****.
In other words, it is for cleansing the rectum after a bowel movement. |

Oh, for the hell of it, I will tell you anyway what that shower thingie is for:
It's for washing the seat of all the semi-dried-up, sticky pee that will have accumulated there. It's also for washing the dried up pieces of toilet paper that have clung to the inside of the bowl.
Oh, someone said it was originally designed for cleansing the anal region, as Scot has pointed out. The problem I've always had is this: when your trousers are around your ankles (and you're already struggling to keep them off the wet floor), it becomes logistically challenging trying to aim and spray at the intended area, without wetting and/or soiling one's legs or one's garments, and then trying to dry off afterwards.
I can be more graphic if you wish |

I installed one in my 'merican vacation home and now I rock-n-roll all day and night long!
Since I don't perform ablutions in the "hurt locker", I have NO tactical problems...

Are you serious? Are you lacking even that much motor control and body awareness? I mean, there is adjustable pressure, the thing can be aimed anywhere easily, and can be maneuvered easily as well, and you are still having trouble? Drying off? That's what toilet paper is for, and if there is no toilet paper there, you take tissues (or paper towels from the sink area) with you.
I can't live without one....
Here is the most ironic thing in the world: 99% of them are made in the following countries (it always say on the opposite end of the nozzle area): Finland, Sweden, Italy, USA. So... what do they make them in those countries for? . I wonder if they are specifically manufactured for the Muslim world (profits are profits), or if they actually are used in the countries of manufacture for other purposes? |

Are you talking about the sprayer itself? We use them in kitchen sinks in the US.

When I 'splained what we were going to use the parts for to the lady at Lowe's...can you imagine the look that she had on her face?

Most American think a bidet is for washing your feet. Sigh...
But just to show that we are not the only ones, a Canadian woman teacher thought it was a urinal...

Me either!
...it has to be the best mother of all inventions...for the bathroom!
It is easy too use, sanitary, and effective, and easy to use, did I mention it was easy to use? Come on! It is so easy to use...

No, not very serious. Some of us around here tend to joke sometimes. So, don't get your knickers in a knot...cos if you do, it will be hard to use the spray thingie!
To be honest, I actually like it, and in fact, can't understand why more western toilets (or even most) do not have it. It complements toilet paper very well, which is a bit different to being a substitute for said commodity.
Plus, using the spray is easier when you are wearing a robe, e.g thawb, than trousers

Now why didn't I think of that before, and just take some tissue into the cubicle, straight from the sink area where in all Gulf bathrooms there will inevitably be loads of tissue paper? Dang, silly me! |

This probably needn't be said, but wtf, if no toilet paper, do not fret your cotton underwear will absorb the moisture ...it's only water. After a good spray there's nothing to wipe.
Perhaps a tad too much info... |

Well, of all the things we've mentioned in this thread, this innocent looking little water sprayer has certainly aroused some interesting comments from the veterans.
I still think newbies should be warned to carry paper or tissues at all times.
Also, to be prepared for the distinct lack of an actual seat to sit on. (With all this petroleum around, the obvious lack of the plastic byproduct is surprising.)
Then, of course, as was mentioned above, the constant pool of water all over the floor takes some getting used to.
At home, I would install a shower cubicle or at least a curtain to restrain the water, but not here?? (Strange!)
Besides the ablutions, the KSA is an amazing place.
I'm now in Khobar and thoroughly enjoying the humidity and the variety of cultures.
I can now speak 7 Arabic words (none of them swear words).
The locals are friendly and helpful, despite our mutual inability to communicate effectively. (Which has often resulted in unexpected food orders and long walks in the wrong direction.)
Since I arrived, I have been feeding on Shuwarmas and packets of potato crisps, but last night I stumbled across a genuine beef steak reastaurant. To the delight of my stomach which requires a healthy daily intake of red meat. I just need to encourage them to stock coca-cola instead of pepsi (flat coke) and their meals will be perfect.
Anyway, we (I) digress from the intended topic of this thread.
Thanks for all the comments everyone, I'll try to restrain myself from more talk in this thread. (Although I am desperately trying to earn my avatar...)
