| The best thing to do in case of a student coming on to you is to always keep the door open.. and when a female student enters make sure someone else is in the same room at the same time.. learned that lesson awhile back... once teaching a uni class had a student came in to my office obviously trying to get her grade changed... unbuttoned shirt, leaning over the desk kind of thing asking me if there was "anything" she could do to get her grade changed to an A.. "anything?" I asked... "anything!" she replied... so I fired back "Will you study?" .. she got the message... |

Yeah;
This thread is getting diverse so I'm going divide my reponses;
Getting hit in by unsuitable students
If your 25 and your student is to then it's your business, otherwise I pretend I don't understand the Japanese (yeah, right!), keep laughing, make sure there are witnesses and stay out of arms reach.
Police checks
Waste of time
Prostitution
In my former incarnation as a `government worker` I saw the following situation more than once;
Man goes to Philipines/Thailand and marries woman half his age, they return and she gets perminant residence and then citizenship based on her husbands citizenship, then she devorces him once she is a citizen in her own right, he complain, officials laugh and tell story to the others in the office. I figure everybody got what they deserved.
Next time your in Manila/Bangkok and upset at sex tourist why not pay a bargirl NOT to have sex with you? Maybe take her out for dinner instead. These girls do it for the money.
We always hear about the `Old, ugly, fat men...` who use prositutes. Would it be better if they were young, thin and handsome? I can hear you typing `Young, thin, hansome men would not need such services` but shy people or socially uncomfortable people like sex too.
Cambodia/ Angkor Watt
Not to be missed. T recommends the Smilie Guest house. Best place I've stayed in Cambodia, Japan, Malaysia or Thailand.
Also BE CAREFUL Cambodia is poor on a scale we can't imagine. I never had a bad experience but BE CAREFUL.

Sex tourism definitely sucks, but what about sex travelling? There are lots of English backpacker chicks in these parts, and well, you know
And how about sex studying? Some of the Euro chicks at uni are busy girls, if you know what I mean.
Tourism definitely disgusts me, but sex is on my list of things to do this century. So is it the 'tourism' part that people object to or the sex? |

It's OK if you are 25 and the person hitting on you is of age. Choice is yours. BUT .................... it is NEVER OK if the student is one of your students, or likely to be. You are in a position of authority with the capacity to affect their future one way or another. PROFESSIONALISM dictates that students (or potential students) are off limits.
Play away. |

In a perfect world where everyone had enough money how many people would be prostitutes? I hate prostitution not because of the act but it degrades people.
I totally agree with Deb, they are your students, the first post reminded me of the movie David Gayle or something to that affect.
Cheers |

If people think the only men utilizing the services of prostitutes are old, ugly, and fat men, they are kidding themselves. Anyone that has been to Bangkok, for example, has seen clearly with their own eyes that the men picking up bargirls range in looks anywhere from Brad Pitt to Danny DeVito.

Prostitution is the so-called "oldest profession" in the world and is not going away anytime soon. Not unlike making the decision to smoke marijuana or snort cocaine, deciding to pay someone for sex is a moral decision that individuals have to make on their own.

Even if you disagree and think it is morally okay, you would be a damn fool to try this...talk about a recipe for disaster! No fling is worth the problems dating one of your students could potentially create! |

| What's wrong with dating your students? I started dating one of my students 10 years ago and we are still together. |

Well, for one thing if you have a messy break-up that goes public it could easily get you fired... |

I still say that there is no point in getting hot under the collar over things over which you have no control.
NOTHING you can do will change this and NOTHING you can do will make prostitution disappear. |

Regardless on where you stand on issues, this line is a crock. Because something has been around forever, makes it okay?
Of course this line was originated to justify soemthing a person knew was bad.
If prostitution is the oldest profession, how could any one have paid her???Huh? |

Agreed, just because something has been around forever doesn't necessary make it okay.

I don't know the origin of the line, and I don't necessary agree with your assessment. Whether prostitution is "good" or "bad" is open to debate. On the surface, I don't see a problem with two individuals of legal age consenting to have sex with one another for money. However, when you have a situation in which some married guy with kids from the United States visits SE Asia on business and pays a girl for sex that was recently sold into the sex trade by her family, the whole thing appears seriously wrong. This is an extreme example, and yes, I realize that there are other situations when you have a single guy picking up a bargirl that entered into the business on her own free will. Regardless of the scenario, if you engage in this kind of activity, I still think you have to question whether or not you are contributing to the exploitation of disadvantaged women. This answer isn't as black and white as it appears on the surface, because from what I understand, it isn't foreign tourists that drive this sex industry in many parts of the world, it is the local population. It is part of the culture in many countries. So even if the fat, ugly old white men go away, it doesn't matter, because the local men drive the market.
As I said before, whether or not to engage in prostitution is a moral choice that individuals have to make on their own (if you want to play russian roulette and risk catching an STD, that's your call). I am not going to judge others based on whether they pay women for sex or not. I might not agree with it, but I am not totally convinced that it is always wrong and immoral either.
I think the point I wanted to make in my previous post is regardless of your personal opinion on this issue, prostitution is here to stay because 1) there will always be people in the market for sex, and 2) there will always be women that decide to enter the trade as a way to make money. Perhaps I am mistaken, time will tell, but if history tells us anything, prostitution isn't going away. |
