I'm not saying that no one should teach in South Korea because it may be unsafe or unstable.

In fact, I was willing to teach in Iraq or Afghanistan if the money was good enough.

Just hope for the best. But prepare for the worst.

The world is a wondrous place. The world is a dangerous place.

For ESL teachers, traveling is a privilege. But it is also a risk.

Remember, Murphy's Law.

Cool

Dear John,

Murphy may have been an optimist.

But I'm a realist. Cool

Dear Captain_Fil,

Ah, but the problem is that all deep-dyed cynics and all wide-eyed Pollyannas
also think they're "realists."

(Of course, all we realists do, too.)

John

Dear John,

Some realists are actually pessimists. And some are nihilists.

I am neither.

CF

You're totally over.reacting. They've been at WAR for over 60 years. They are NOT at peace. They did NOT sign a peace treaty EVER. It's fine here Smile

Seriously.

It's like saying that the US is at orange alert. So? It's just part of the day to day life here.

Dear Captian_Fil,

"Some realists are actually pessimists. And some are nihilists.

I am neither. "

What a coincidence - neither am I. But just the other day, I was talking with another realist and, after vowing me to silence, he confessed that he was actually a pessimistic nihilist.

Wolves in sheeps' clothing abound. Very Happy

John

Think about it in another way, NK's are starving. In most media it is blamed on the NK government, but who has put sanctions on that country for the last, what like, 50 years. Sanctions have never and will never cause political change. They just hurt the people who they are claiming to help. We use to call it siege warfare, starve they enemy, and anyone under his control. I am not saying they are a great bunch of people, but come on. It wouldn't take much to change things if the leaders of most of the world were not itching for war Exclamation

OK, I'm sorry, but I have to respond to this.

Having family from North Korea, I can safely say that the vast majority of hungry people go hungry due to Kim Jong-Il's lavish lifestyle and the army he funds to maintain control.

If Kim didn't spend so much on the armed forces, gifts to his loyalists, and his own luxury, North Koreans wouldn't be so poor as they are today.

And if you look at the sanctions on North Korea, most of them are geared towards preventing them from trading in arms and/or technology. There are NO SACTIONS stopping North Korea from buying tons of wheat from Russia or rice from China or beef from Canada. The fact is, North Korea simply chooses to spend it's money on arms and developing it's nuclear and rocket technology instead.

I'm glad to know you're safe and sound in Suwon.

The Korean peninsula is peaceful...for now.

As the maxim goes: "Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst."

Are you prepared for the worst?

Dear John,

True. Wolves in sheep's clothing do abound.

But realists can spot those wolves. That's because realists see the world as it really is.

That, the world is full of dangers...and opportunities.

Realists spot the dangers and seize the opportunities. That's how people succeed in such a hazardous but wondrous world.

Isn't it great to be a realist?

CF

Dear Captain_Fil,

Ah, it is, indeed - except for the one small fact that sometimes reality sucks and there's nothing that can be done to change it.

John

Dear John,

You are right. Reality sucks at times and there is nothing we can do about it. Sad

But realists, like myself, know that is how things are. So we cut our losses and move on. Cool

And though there are things we cannot control, we constantly seek to bend reality to our wills. (This does not involve Jedi mind tricks.)

CF

It happened on the wrong coast (east coast of Japan) to have any effect on Korea (west coat of Japan).

On the other hand it has the potential to have serious effects on places like Hawaii and California (similar to the effects of the 2006 Indonesian tsunami on Africa).
