You have been working and continue to do so on the wrong type of visa, you have handed your passport to a third party who used fraudulent means to obtain another visa

I would wonder from the exchange how would anyone on this board would know that fraud has been used to obtain the visa.

Many of my colleagues are currently holding F visas that were obtained from the university where they currently hold teaching posts. While they are not employed by the university that issued the visa, they are currently teaching there. Would a F visa obtained by a university with a partner ship with a British University be considered illegal?

To answer one of LanGuTou's last points, "you cannot hold two visas at the same time so there must have been a period between the LA consulate canceling your previous visa and adding a new visa when you were in the PRC with no active visa": I held two visas, briefly, at the same time. Both were in the passport and the old one had no cancelation marks on it whatsoever; the passport went to the Chinese consulate nearly a month before the old one expired, and when it came back the old was was still valid, as of course was the new one. Both the PSB and the border people had to be aware of this.

Even if a previous visa had no 'cancelled' stamp it would still be invalid as the latest visa is the valid one.

Yes it would. If a foreigner is being paid a salary/wages by a Chinese employer the foreigner is required to have an FEC or Alien Work Permit associated with his employer and also a Resident's Permit.
