"...I normally write something..."
Now I understand. I must admit, when I worked at a training center, I too wrote down a basic plan/schedule for the hour. I did it for 2 reasons - the classes are a bit more demanding and the people enjoy seeing the plan. Typed is even better.
My boss at WSE told me, he didn't care if I winged it, but if the people see something on paper they will love it.
Paper, paper, I got paper. I have loose leaf, I have perforated, I have different colors - what and how much do you want? Legal pads will cost you more.
Too many dead trees. Wasted books.
Now in a less "professional" setting, the plan is in my brain. I need no reminders; the materials are the plan in my mind. |

Some of my lessons I've done so many times that most of the plan is in my head....Ill just have some brief notes with phonetic transcriptions (easily forgotten) or grammar rules etc.
A lot of my lesson planning is done in my head, considering how to use it etc. I spend more time thinking about the lesson than I do writing the plan, if not more time at least as much time. Provided Im teaching in the same setting I can re-use written plans with out much amendment. |

better unis demand FTs to submit their syllabus beforehand. Some ask for more detailed planning too. Of course if one works at a "vocational college" it may not be the same or as demanding.
As for the New Interchange books for the local unis, they are just so basic. They are just about as high as intermediate and the advanced ones, Cambridge Press, come as New Passage or something like that.

Ive never had to submit a syllabus beforehand. The vocational college wanted lesson plans weekly with lesson aims, goals, and structure listed. If I had to write a syllabus I would definitely stick to a book. My syllabus would follow the books structure.
I really like the 'Passages' book. I have the students and teachers copy of book 4 which I use a lot. Ive never used book 5, but have seen it and also like the look of it.
Im a big fan of Face2Face too, and am trying to buy the complete set. Its a bit expensive tho, so its a slow process for me to get all of them. Books are 200RMB each, teachers books another 250 RMB, and class CDs are 300RMB. I want 4 different levels; pre-int/int/upper int/advanced, so its getting expensive and I cant buy them all at once! |

Sounds like a book salesman is talking. I can help; Market Leader course books for Business at about 500 for a set.

I've consulted uni students on "Face2Face" basis..wasn't a fan of it though. It gave consultations to my worst students mostly and they usually had troubles understanding me. For the sake of your debate, have you done face to face classes at that vocational uni there?
Now, back on topic

In my opinion, a good book should not need a syllabus, but some outline of steps how the FT wishes to carry on with the topics in. I believe that a good FT with a good book may add about 30-40% of his/her own views and supporting facts to the points in the book taught. But that percentages of extra material often depend on the length and scope of the courses as well as the students. No offence, but I wish we stuck to our professional integrity more than to those benefits we collect around. |
