Dear dmb,
Many thanks - but I hope to surpass even that one's execrableness long before another 1868 posts accumulate.

I don't get the when are you going home. I get more of the, why is China better than America? Why would you want to live anywhere BUT America. At least my Mom accepts my decision. |

People wonder what the pull of HK is. There are many...money, travel, great flat (i got LUCKY!!), friends, and HK. I just love HK. I do. Some days I would sell it all for a one way ticket home, but all in all, I love it. I know that at the end of August, I will be itching to get back here to my flat and my life.
Now, I am itching to get home to dad's bbqs, good Canadian beer and my friends. |

dmb,
I do certainly prefer Qatar to Turkey for many reasons........Istanbul was too big a city for me. I felt unsafe in that city especially as a single woman. I got robbed twice there, once on the streets and once at my apartment. Earthquakes are also not my favorites.....I was there when the big earthquake hit Istabul in August 1999, had to sleep in a park for a week and endure all the aftershocks, etc....... My teaching experience there was also the worst in my career, so that did not help the situation at all. Turkey is a beautiful country to visit, people were generally very friendly, do not get me wrong but just not the place for me.
As for Qatar, I feel safe here, have never had any problems adjusting and the pay and lifestyle are definitely better than in Turkey. When people say that Qatar is the worse place on earth , I cannot agree with that statement at all. It is up to the individual to make the best of every situation. Someone could be very depressed, unhappy in any other place. We are all responsible for our happiness. I make the best out of every cultural experience and learn from them as well. Qatar has its own beauty if one sees it with an open and positive mind. I have to say that right now, I work for a great company and that must have something to do with it all.
That is my opinion of course and no disrespect to anyone who disagrees with me. |

John, I'm serious. You're looking in the wrong place. Try a biography of Hurst. There are even one or two rather good documentaries on the subject. I've seen two that mentioned the 'Rosebud' reference in 'Citizen Kane'. The delusional gushings of a cinematic w@nker could perhaps be considered entertainment rather than information.
The sled is a reasonable metaphor, but it could just as easily have been a bike. It was his favourite ride, after all |

"Rosebud" is a common literay metaphor in many languages for a certain part of the female anatomy.
Modesty dictaes that I should not name it.
Hence the use of the expression "deflower" ! |

Well, Rosebud's being WRH's pet name for a part of Marion Davies' anatomy was news to me - but it does seem to have some "anecdotal" support:

Personally, I kind of like the sled, though - a concrete symbol of an abstract longing: for a "mother's love". When that moment comes for us to leave this world, so often thoughts turn to her who brought us into it.

Dear Stephen Jones,
Well, maybe - but I'm hoping my attention will be focused on that other portal, the tunnel with the "bright light".

Since I'll probably shuffle off this mortal coil before you, I'll post on Dave's afterward and let you know just what to expect.

I don't find it at all odd that Desert Flower prefers Qatar to Turkey.
I've never visited Qatar, but I've lived in Saudi ARabia, which is like qatar (only more so!). Having spent time in Turkey, I can easily see how Qatar would in many ways be a more appealing place than Turkey, esp. for single ladies like ourselves. And I'm not only talking about money.
Turkey is obviously more "fun" and a more obviously appealling place than the Gulf. However, day to day life in the Gulf often has the advantage of being safe, hassle-free and comfortable. Can the same be said for Turkey? In some cases, obviously yes, but obviously not in Desert Flower's experience. |
