Roppongi is a slum.
A friend of mine was visiting about a half a year ago and ventured there himself one night only to be drugged by Nigerians once he agreed to enter a bar with them.
They somehow managed to steal about 2 grand from him with his credit card. |

Depends. One guy got drugged at a high end bar (read it on gaijinpot). If you go to a dive, especially now, you are getting what you asked for. But if you go to a nice place, and get drugged, it's bad luck. |

I have been wary of Roppongi from the time an upsetting news story broke of a British national going missing there for some time. This happened in the late nineties and murder was suspected. Her name, I believe, was Lucy Black.

Wasn't it Lucie Blackman?
Just out of interest; how many of the horror stories being posted here don't involve foreign men? Seems that most of us girls are managing to stay safe on nights out.
I've been to Roppongi many times with friends and we've never had any of these problems because amongst other things a) we don't go off with strangers, b) we definately don't go off with strangers alone and c) we don't accept random drinks from strangers... common sense rules that should be followed by any of us on a night out in any city of any country.
Hell, Roppongi is actually one of the safer sleaze pits I've encountered in my travels; at least armed police don't hang around waiting to ambush unsuspecting or drunken foreigners and slap them with fake infractions complete with ridiculous cash fines payable immediately (they'll even escort you to an ATM if you don't have sufficient funds on your person) around here. And no, this isn't a Chinese nor even Asian scam. |

To be fair the scams pretty much exclusively target guys, but they're probably the easier marks for the reasons you mentioned. Like Lucie Blackman though anyone who works as a hostess is taking risks along the same lines. |

| Sorry to hear about losing your money. I have considered going to Japan for some time and didn't think scams like this happened there. Here in southeast China, you hear about this more often than not. No place is immune to scams. |
