Which makes one wonder what will happen when that all passes.

When the communist babies die off, houses get shuffled, and less and less people are growing up in a society that gives most of them a free pass on a mortgage. Those old houses won't last forever, I've been in plenty of those old "passed down" houses and they aren't nearly as invincible as Poles make them out to be (if you talk to a Pole, they'll tell you that Polish houses are built to last 1,000 years) so at some point, home building will start up again and with it, mortgages.

If you think these earnings are low, have a look at Romania and Bulgaria. It is a continuing mystery to me how locals survive on less than 200 Euros a month. But they do.

I'd say on average Poles earn anywhere between 1200 to 2500 NET with some getting up to 3000 and more. While living in the metro area it was obvious that the average pay was in the upper 3000s with sky being the limit. I now reside in a more rural area and majority here earns in the lower 2000s.
It also depends on their choice of career or possible entrepreneurship.
It fluctuates as much as it does in any other country; frankly I don't understand the confusion. Stateside, people make as little as $8 per hour or less if their job is commission based, yet they survive, the same applies here and anywhere else on this planet.
Given that the Polish Prime Minister makes about $12,000 per month [NET]... I think that making half of that is still a decent wage and allows for a very comfortable life.

beeeeeecause they get commission pay on top of the $8/hour? what's the difference how much someone gets paid per hour if they're making good money with their commission pay? i don't really understand why you chose this example. weird.

The commission is usually not paid on top of your pay, for the most part it's either your commission or the 8$ if you don't make over the minimum pay. I'd worked commission paid jobs for many years and unfortunately more often than not you don't make that much, unless you're a high end sales person.

Yes, it's about $700 per month NET, which is about $200 less than a GAP floor staff makes back in the states, or an average call center employee brings home after 40 hrs of work. That's of course, only, if they get a full time job.

I found the median salary as :

Median Monthly Disposable Salary (After Tax) 2,500.00 zł

http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/country_result.jsp?country=Poland

There would certainly be a cash economy but that happens in all countries.

This site was also interesting:

http://www.payscale.com/research/PL/Country=Poland/Hourly_Rate

It had ESL teachers included. It seems ESL teachers earn at the bottom of the 'professional' fields but to even compare to the IT industry seems ok.

Infinite, I'd like you to read what you just wrote.

First, you wrote, " Stateside, people make as little as $8 per hour or less if their job is commission based."

Then you wrote, "The commission is usually not paid on top of your pay, for the most part it's either your commission or the 8$ if you don't make over the minimum pay."

So what is your point, that if you're a completely lousy salesperson, the best you're going to make is $8/hour? If you can't sell a damn thing, it's probably time for a job change, considering the entire job is based on "selling stuff". Consider what waitresses and bartenders earn per hour, I believe it's $2.13/hour but many of them go home with $150-$300 per night with all the tips.

oh now you're getting totally ridiculous. way to compare apples to wing nuts. we're discussing the average pay in Poland and you bring up a minimum wage paying job in the USA as a comparison? Not to mention, I'd love to see what kind of math you used to reach the conclusion that a GAP employee earns $500/month NET. The minimum wage in the USA right now is $7.25/hour. If someone worked 40 hrs. a week at GAP, or Macy's, or wherever for that matter, they would net about $1,160 ($7.25 x 40 x 4 weeks). Not to mention, it would put them in a low tax bracket resulting in only a 15% tax deduction. It is not $200 less than $700/month, it is considerably more than $700/month.

Quit typing crap, some of us are actually paying attention.

It's called reading and comprehension Dynow. I won't entertain your rant however, read enough of your posts in the past prior to you arriving in Poland, during and after and I'll leave them without a comment. I think there'd been enough pointless arguments on this board already.
