Peterparvo with this comment
'They will eventually get you (women), sooner or later. They will treat you like a beast of burden and that's it.'
sounds like another embittered recent arrival in KFUPM from SE Asia !

| No, just somebody who is sick of having his wife treated like a farm animal. |

Dear PeterParvo,
While scot47's post was harsh, I'd say he has a point. There are a lot of things about Saudi that are distasteful to many, but if it has reacher the point where you feel "sick" about it, then why, in heaven's name, remain there?
Regards,
John |

I am sure that you have met many of those sad individuals who openly hate every second of their time in KSA but can't tear themselves away beauase they love those picturesn of King Abdulaziz (500 SR note)

| No need to tear here. After the most recent incident with my wife and the locals, it's time to pull the plug. |

Dear PeterParvo,
I'm sorry that you and your wife have had such a hard time in Saudi. It's probably one of the toughest, if not THE toughest, countries in the world - for women, especially.
I hope you both relocate to a far more pleasant environment. I think you're wise to be getting out. I saw too many marriages (including one of my own)
fall apart there.
Regards,
John |

I would like to hear Peter's story, if he doesn't mind sharing. A wife's (or any woman's) experience can be so different depending on her age, her nationality or ethnicity, her ability to entertain herself or find work, and of course, her general level of tolerance for either being invisible or entirely too visible.
I found that being a strong-willed woman who insisted on not only respectful treatment but even "Saudi princess" treatment went a long way towards helping me endure and enjoy my stay. I found out quickly that most men that you encounter in public are terrified of a woman who is not willing to back down and accept lesser treatment. Watch the way the upper-class Saudi women handle themselves, and take note. They are very proud, and they never tolerate disrespectful behavior from any strange man. God bless 'em...they are a powerful bunch of females under all that black! Very few men are brave enough to risk a public clash with an angry female. |

The final straw that broke the camel's back!!!
In this country .... You do what you can to ease the frustration of daily life restrictions...I admit it is just plain hard for women here. If it's time up, it's time up. Get away, take a break...and once your horrible experience has mellowed and / or you become hard up for cash...I supose you can always return... |

| I think the Op was asking abt conditions for single women teaching in KSA. The question of how your wife is treated is not quite the same. |

Oddly enough, I saw an article on the 'Foreign Policy' website, about the worst countries to be a woman, with 9 graphs, detailing different aspects of life (education, law, maternity, etc) and in at least 4 of the graphs Saudi was ranked more favourably than at least a dozen African countries, as well as a few of the poorest Asian countries (Afghanistan, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar).
Oddly enough female participation in government in Saudi was ranked as the same as in Brazil and Turkey... :S
Here's a link to the data, if you're interested:
http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2012/04/24/the_worst_places_to_be_a_woman#2
The reliability of the data may be up for debate, of course. |

Dear bulgogiboy,
Maybe I should have been more specific:
" It's probably one of the toughest, if not THE toughest, countries in the world - for EXPAT NON-SAUDI women, especially.

There were a few anomalies in the tables. The one that jumped out at me was Sweden has a sex ratio of males to females as imbalanced towards males as India and China??? Huh??
But I digress...
Certainly the condition of women in KSA is better than the poor African and Asian countries. It is in so many ways a gilded cage. Their favorable maternal mortality numbers alone helps to pull them up in the ranks.

| After spending some time in the KSA, I cant understand why any expat female would come here. It would be at the bottom of any list... the money is only attraction and it isnt that much better than anywhere else/ |
