Then how, pray tell, can they not be Canada's team? The truth is that the Leafs have the widest fan base in the sport. The conditions you just described can be witnessed in many different arenas.
To bad about your Oilers. I was pulling for them. It is refreshing to know you're not a Philly fan.
Very good point, Shaman. I knew it would be picked up quickly. However, I still stand by that. The only reason half the fans in other cities cheer for the Leafs is 'cause they were the only English team when these fans were born or they have all emigrated West from TO. The next generation, who grew up with their own local teams, will not be cheering for TO or anybody else but their "home" team.
Cheering for Calgary? God, no! I'm an Oiler fan. They are the enemy. If you think I don't like TO you should hear what I say about Calgary and I currently live close to there. Cheering for the Flames would be like letting a woman pick you up at the bar for reasons of mercy. Not right. And as this is trash talk hockey time, all I say about TO also has to be taken with a saline conversion unit.
P.S. Who are you cheering for now? The Flames? |

Go Oilers. Despite trading away all big their talent last year (except for Crybaby Comrie, who left this season), they always play with heart, and actually came very close to getting in this year. Here's hoping that they can hang on to the current crop of young guns.
Oh, and let's go Habs, we're down 1-0 as I type... |

Alas. Another year, another beer, watered down with Shaman's tears. With the looming work shortage, I've even been stripped of a true Leaf fan's motto:
There's always next year.
Glad you picked up on the Calgary tweak, ntropy. I have an aunt and uncle living in Edmonton. They aren't too happy that I have a friend and former teammate playing with the Stamps.

Who's that? A friend of mine that I used to play ball with too just retired from the Stamps last year, Greg Frers. Now he's an analyst with CBC. |

Jay McNeil and I played both high school and junior ball together. I also knew Sponge and Duane Forde from a brief (though unspectacular) uni career.
I was in Edmonton when the Esks were playing the Stamps in the playoffs (1999). "Who are you cheering for?" my aunt interrogated. After cursing a Stamps score, my cousins would immediately cast a POed glance my way.

| I wonder just how many people the Flames' bandwagon can hold. Jerome IS the league MVP! |

inmexico,
Since you're in Vancouver, what is the sentiment like there for the Flames. I know there is no love between the two, but I still figure most people in Vancouver are behind the Flames to go all the way. |

| There has been a growing rivalry between the Canucks and Flames, but it has been developing more out of mutual respect than hatred. The Flames won the respect of most Canuck fans when they won the series against them. I would say that the general feeling in BC is that the Flames have become our new horse. I am one of the few that I know that has always had a soft spot for the Flames. I like the Flames, but hate the Stamps...Go Eskimos Go............can ya tell I'm not an Albertan? |

The Flames became the defacto team for western Canadians when they eliminated the 'Nucks, and the defacto "national team" for all Canadians with the demise of the Laffs this week. |

VanKen - Are you saying that there is no respect for the Flames amongst the 'nucks faithful? I don't think the sentiment in BC is like that at all. I agree with your statement about western Canada, but there is western Canada.....and then there's BC.
Approx. 25% of the adult population in Vancouver wouldn't know a hockey stick from an igloo. |

Not at all. I meant that no western Canadian worth his or her salt would cheer for the Laffs if there was another western based team (i.e. the Flames) to cheer for. Most Canuck fans that I know DO respect the Flames for beating the local boys.

Perhaps if your 25% of the population has been living under a rock the past few months. Don't you remember the Bertuzzi incident? The media sure made a lot more people pay attention to hockey. |

About the igloo comment........I was more referring to the lack of actual hockey knowledge. There are a lot of bandwagoneers in these parts. HHMMM.....bandwagoneers.....I like it.
