Fantasyland. "Career path?" Keep dreaming. "Upward mobility?" Not in my working class town. "Benefits?" Now few and far between. Where on earth have you been living?

Here in London, a plumber can command 100,000 GB pounds a year. The waiting list for a reputable plumber can be 2 months.
Courses at college in plumbing have been over-subscribed for about 3 years. |

Dear Sasha,
Well, one with clean, well-functioning pipes, anyway
Regards,

Dear Johnslat
Ah, you poor benighted creatures in the decadent West! You can only dream of having pipes of such well-functioning cleanliness as we take for granted in the Motherland. For you, you can only dream a veritable pipe-dream!

| Better not send your girl overseas by herself if she is not the adventurous type. Explore your local options thoroughly first. |

|
|
Being unemployed for more than a few months naturally produces a nervous breakdown - financially and emotionally. Anti-depressants help a lot. They help motivate a person to do the right, healthy things such as eat properly, exercise, sleep eight hours a night, be sociable, etc.
When I finished my teaching credential work in the USA, at the age of 40, I finally found a job - as a waitress. Hurt the heck out of my legs.... but I did it. Until I was able to move on.
I don't understand why some people think being unemployed is far better than any job.... When young, life is often s*(%)@. Unless you have a trust fund. The rest of us work. and if a person can't find work, can't do what is necessary to find work, they need a kick in the butt. That said, I am certain the job situation in the States has many people in dire conditions, including some in my large extended family. And yes, being young is good for many things - such as teaching jobs in China or other places.
You might suggest your friend see a doctor about anti-depressants, get involved in a social-self-help group or group therapy, and accept the fact that being young and looking for work now is not easy. Heck, I graduated with a degree in psychology/writing but with Nixon's recession back in '73, I got a job as a clerk typist. Plus that was around the time all the mental hospitals were throwing the patients into the streets, so there were few entry level jobs in psychology.
Yes, that changed my dreams, my goals, my reality, my life. That's called living.
You might want to give her a deadline on your help. Deadlines motivate most of us. This is prime hiring season - she should be working full-time, at least five yours a day, looking for work EVERYWHERE possible.
Good luck. |
