THOSE are the only reasons? There must be some kind of prospects left in the USA for those who want to work, and I'm not talking McDonaldLand. And I think there are available women in the USA. |

| I could never figure out why people really take low-paying jobs in a country. If you're young, it won't be a big deal. You still have the time to pull a year or two getting in experience for a low wage. However, when you get older, you need to be paid more. If you settle for low wages, you won't be able to save much. Eventually, you will have to return to your home country. You'll be worn down or you'll be labeled 'too old'. If you've worked 20 years to save 20,000 dollars, that will disappear within a year or two. What then? You end up in the poor house, exactly where you'd have been if you'd just stayed in the USA all along. Make sure you get paid a decent salary. |

Hey guys, the guy at my school e-mailed me the following:
i want to tell you that i've finished all the process of visa application. now just waiting for another paper to be issued. i think i should be able to get it before this coming Wednesday. i will send it to you by Fedex when i have the papers.
Does this sound normal? After reading through this thread, I thought I'd ask. |
FedEx? They send it Express Mail.
Other than that, I'd say that it sounds normal. There's sometimes two papers sent to you: the large yellow certificate and a smaller letter of invitation.
I'd still take Non Sequitur's advice and have a second school waiting in the wings should this one go belly-up. At this point, though, i don't think you have reason to worry. Don't be surprised if your letter of invitation doesn't arrive until the first or second week of August, though. |

I've decided to pass on going to China, at least for now. Maybe I'll wait a few years until the salary situation improves. There are more attractive places that pay what China does, and some of the threads in the China forum are downright scary, with all the rip-offs and con games. I'm not going there to relive somebody else's nightmare. The weather isn't good enough, for one, and pollution is too bad, for another. Thailand still looks superior.

Plenty of lies, deceit, and chicanery in Thailand too; not to mention that the Thais will likely work you twice as hard in return for their pittance than the Chinese, with none of the other benefits offered by Chinese employers. You won't be spending many weekends at the beach either - you'll be too busy working.
From your post in another thread:

| I want to be as enthusiastic about a job in my 10th year as I am on my 10th day. I don't want to be job-hopping all over the place every year or even more than once a year because the present gig sucks and the only jobs available are those that nobody else wants, with my colleagues moving around all over as well. That's not for me. That's no way to have a 'career'. If I'll be moving every year and enduring and dodging rip offs and scams the entire time, I'm not going to go there. |
Thailand has 'sucky gigs' in abundance, ranging from the insufferable to the barely tolerable, in addition to far more than its fair share of unsavoury and undesirable expatriates (most of whom end up 'teaching' EFL to survive). Abusive and exploitative employers, together with job-hopping, midnight-running teachers are just as prevalent there as in China.
If you are seeking long-term stability and a career, run-of-the-mill EFL in Asia may not be the answer.

Last year back in NZ mine arrived by DHL.
FedEx may have a branch handy to where that uni is and gets used for international mail instead of Chinapost Express/EMS. |

| For documents FedEX, DHL, or TNT is probably the quickest way. And all 3 have offices around China. (not a big fan of UPS but they have a presence also.) |

I learn something new every day. I've seen DHL in China but not in the jerkberg towns that I work in. TNT? Never even heard of it! |

It seems you are right. I'll start looking into culinary school and forget this TESOL business. |

Dutch company. Competitive rates and service around the world. I have used them over the years. Quick and often cheaper than the US based companies.
