| Any David Letterman fans should remember he used to routinely call a man in Saskatchewan just because of his name.. Dick Assman. I believe he was a mechanic. I also knew a guy named Richard Head, and you know another name for Richard. Are parents aloud to be this cruel to their own children??? |

Years ago I worked with a young woman called Dawn McKraken. Not so wierd, but her father's name was Phil.
I've seen phone book entries for a "John Outhouse."
I had a Japanese stutend who was named Mikimasa. He was very young, and his parents would have darned well known who Mickey Mouse was (Japan has a Disneyland, for crying out loud). But named their kid that anyway.
I had another student named "Shinobu." Although written differently, this name is a homonym for the verb "to be a ninja." She had a good laugh when I showed her the "alternate spelling" to her name.
I had a Korean student named Song once. I never did get her to sing for me, but at least she was aware of the English implication of her name. |

| Many moons ago, I worked on a now-defunct newspaper in HK, where one girl was told to get an English name, as we guilo's couldn't remember Chinese names. She came into the office, delighted with her new, Shakespearean name, Ophelia. Cantonese surname? K.ok. Nobody dared explain. |

in keeping with the porn theme.... I used to work at Strange & Hoey - no, not an escort service - a law firm in downtown Los Angeles
Other oddities:
- family relations who carry the unfortunate surname of "Raper"
- a psychology professor with the last name "Snodgrass"
- a middle school student I taught whose first name was..... "Bah" pronounce it like the noise a sheep makes and there you have it.
luv,

Dear schely10,

which reminds me - one of my best friends is named Maggie Dew (bad grammar, admittedly) and her Dad was William (Billy) Dew - yes, they have French (billet doux) ancestry.
Regards,
John |

| There was an article a few years back about parents in Cosat rica or nicarauga giving their children what they thought were good American names like Wrench, Oldsmobile, Chicago, and so on. The govt had to step in and make it illegal. I cant find a link yet, but will keep looking. |

I remember a linebacker for the Detroit Lions in the 80s (or 90s?) named Harry Colon. What the hell were his parents thinking?

Let's see...Thailand is fertile ground for names that are fairly inocuous in Thai but wirth a giggle in English. I've had more than a few Kittiporns, Nuts, Boos, Nits, Porns, and and Jeeps. In Korea I had a Kim Suk Kyu -- poor thing.
Porn name using the pet+street formula... Blackie Long. Wow, that is kinda sexy, eh? |
