The schools straight up told her that they preferred male applicants to females, regardless of their education or experience. If that's not asking to hire pedophiles, I don't know what is.

edit: My eastern European friend was mostly applying at kindergartens.

Um....what?

I apologize for your confusion. These events scared my friend as much as I.

My friend is a licensed teacher in her home country and specialized in English as a foreign language. She found it rather shocking, as did I, that kindergartens in China would rather hire her unqualified, inexperienced, and disinterested husband, who simply followed her to interviews, over a trained and experienced teacher based on the fact that her husband is a male. Yes, the schools did explicitly say that they would rather hire a male.

I don't know any rational employers who would willingly turn down turn down a trained and experienced teacher in favor of an almost random male, unless the school is begging for trouble.

Me, too. I've know of places that prefer men because in their experience women have been more susceptible to "culture shock".

I don't think this applies to this particular case. My friend's husband is a professional who already had a job in our city. The employers knew that she would be here for several years because of her husband's job.

Now this might be a funny post coming from a guy that just signed up and is pretty much a "newbie" himself haha ... BUT: Im a newbie on here, but I'm "teaching" for a bit now. To be honest not for long, just a year, but thats enough to see whats going on.

First - I'm in China, so it might vary on countries...

@EuorGuy: Given your disclaimer, why not post this on the Newbie Forum, 2nd on the list, under General Discussions... unless of course, you hadn't intended to address fellow newbies.

Hardly so when that economic form constitutes servitude to non-whites on a higher rung on the social ladder. Wishful thinking on the OPs part to imagine he/she can surpass their social standing by intentionally(?) denying them of the level of professionalism befitting their status.

Wishful thinking? yes.
Whishful thinking by whom? A person conditioned to praise whiteness and westerness as superior.
About what? being able to do nothing and get paid for it.

This is quite synonymous to colonial thinking, where the european elite were carried around by third world peoples on buggys. That is the life the OP wants.

EuroGuy in his euphoria over China's still relatively low cost of living, hasn't yet experienced reverse culture shock. When he returns to Europe with wads of RMB, it won't be limo or even taxi drivers carrying him around.
