Well I agree with drgonzo, i'm actually surprised that I devoted so much of my energy to responding to guru. Although he came out of left field with an unfounded personal attack that I couldn't just let slip by without being addressed, i think things got a little out of hand. I think we would all be better served just sticking to the topic.

Just been looking through this old thread that guru resurected. He offered some useful info but was slated for it. Shame. Others offered stuff about not needing hot water in Medan - wow!
Anyway, a month or two back I told a friend of mine, who's in the UK, about a certain school in Medan that was, according to posts I'd read on Dave's, looking for teachers. I just spoke to him for the first time in a month and he told me that he emailed the school but got no reply. Nothing, nada. Not even a "thanks but no thanks". It's a shame that, while some posters are telling us that schools in Sumatra are finding it difficult to find teachers, an experienced and qualified teacher doesn't even get a reply to his email.

I find the biggest difficulty is getting hold of up to date e-mail addresses. Even the web page mentioned in this thread has addresses that are obsolete.

Keep trying. Try google.

The problem is that Indonesians like old technologies, especially the phone. Email is often not taken as seriously for professional communication as it is in the West.

try http://expatforum.digitaldevelopment.com/list.cfm?channel=20

there are a few jobs posted there!

Sorry about wrong emails, as it's beyond my control. I'm only doing this to inform others and to get teachers and inevitably help the education system here.

It's not realy a secret to be kept about the decent jobs because there are so many new schools opening up especially in jkt.

Give me an email message if you'd like a couple of present leads and i'd be happy to help.

Bookmark this page, it's pretty useful for getting leads:

http://www.jobsdb.com/ID/EN/V6/JS/JobSearch/JobSearch.asp?PN=JobListing&pagename=adslist&searchtext=teach

Even if some of the schools advertisong aren't looking for English teachers, it's worth taking the details from the ad and firing off a CV.

Good luck.

Omen, what happened? It's been a few months and still only one. Maybe we'd best give this a miss!

Some have asked me for proof of great jobs. Here's one:

Great salary in US dollars (over $5000 in Aus $)
Free private apartment and other benefits
Respectful and motivated students
Located in secure, up-scale neighborhood

Monthly salary will be up to $4000 US dollars; package includes a private apartment near the school, airfare, medical, visa costs and membership in an exclusive sports club.

There's still lots of other great jobs. So yes you can make a career of teaching and yes there are decent jobs.

Yes, writers are certainly correct about school principals failing to use a bit of common courtesy and replying to job applicants.

I can never be sure if my application has been lost in the Internet ether or the school has been swamped with applicants and doesn't have time to reply.

Lots of good advice here from Guru. There are good jobs to be found in Indonesia BUT real schools expect teachers to be qualified (most of the time) experienced, hardworking and professional. The money is good, the hours are good but you do have many more responsibilities - basically you have the responsibility of being a good teacher, and being accountable for everything that happens inside your classroom.

So, if you are thinking of watching 'Shrek' for 60 minutes with your classes, coming to work drunk, handing out photocopies of 'Murphy's Grammar In Use' then putting your feet up and calling that a lesson you'd be better of at language centre (language school being an obvious oxymoron).

Anyway, as with everything, there are good points & bad points. Working in one of the larger language mills you'll never be lonely - shared house, lots of guests and lots of invites to others' shared houses. Lots of people to mix with, socialize with, get drunk with, go on vacation with and swap war stories with: good fun (though you'll usually be housed with at least one psychopath but these guys tend to stay in their rooms pulling the legs off cockroaches & reading gun magazines).

International Schools/British Council type organizations - no thanks, I worked with the BC in Shanghai, far too snotty and 'serious'.

National Plus - mostly career teachers, or long-termers who've moved here from the language mills. Been there & seen the sights and the 'fun' so now settled down for an easy life.

*beep* = roach Exclamation

Team Papua, you have summed it all up. Though there are language school teachers who are professional!

BTW is that actually a photo of you on the bike? And where do you go mountain biking? It seems like fun.

Many schools are looking now for teachers for July. Start emailing your cv's!
