Why a language teacher should first of all think of prescriptive grammar when hearing the word grammar is an interesting point.
The point I am trying to make here however is that the use of the so-called "reduced" form is in fact part of standard English, both RP and Network English. One can be prescriptive but you still need to get the prescription right. And that means having at least a nodding acquaintance with the descriptive grammar of the standard dialects you are supposed to be teaching. |
