to stay on topic... i have read a lot about this instituion known as ET, sounds like more bad than good to me. btw molly, the self-made ET thread moderator- how about answering the questions about money rates, inflation and ET properly?
to get off topic... for the love of god! there is no need to be so touchy about a little wine gathering in midst of a thread. if there was a huge problem i think the mods would have ended it or something. there's tonnes of useful and useless info on your precious ET all over this forum so no need to worry about that. |

Corall I think it was explained to you politely enough.
Forming your own thread isn't that difficult and it's just a mater of nettiquete (sp).
I do wish the moderators had erased it though, it's quite a bore having to read in the middle of this thread..
Regards,

All right, I will do my best. Perhaps I should indeed drink a glass of wine or two before I start...
First, I am not a financial analyst so I can't really answer the convoluted figuring that was posted above. Second, I do not set the salaries and in spite of my arguing, they are what they are. They seem to be par with most other language schools here, with the exception of the British Council, of course. Everyone bitches about his/her job no matter where he/she works, and that is fine. However, bitching and moaning with no suggestion for change does not get any sympathy from me. The wheels turn slowly, for a variety of reasons that I don't care to get into here, but they do turn, at least.
We don't have very many disappearos anymore, and I would be curious to know if other schools have found the same thing. I think it is partly because we try to hire teachers who have at least some training and at least a little committment to teaching. We also give teachers a 2-month probation, so if they do not work out we can ask them to leave. Our students pay a lot of money for our courses and we are trying to give them their money's worth, an uphill battle on my part.
BTW, the guy who started this thread did not come to work for us, since he did not have a TEFL certificate. I have no idea if he came to Turkey or not.
People who know me know that I am a pretty straight talker and I will pretty much tell it as it is. That is unusual in Turkey and I know it shocks the management sometimes. I try to advocate for the teachers as much as I can, but I am not always (or often!) listened to. However, I am still here. I still think we are a pretty good school in spite of its flaws. I haven't heard of any perfect ones...
This probably has not answered the questions to your satisfaction, but there it is.
happy new year |

i think that close to everyone has gone off topic on a thread, has not had questions answered when they have posted etc. it's all a part of the forum if you ask me.
and my question was in regards to pay. since pay is the best thing that this school has going for it to perspective employees, wouldn't they want to make sure that they are reevaluating their pay scale regularly?
i realize that things move slowly but i thought that the question was valid since the first thing always said about ET is "we pay on time". paying on time is one thing, paying enough is another.
now i need a glass of wine...
ps. i do realize that you try your best on this forum molly - are they paying you enough? |

Corall, very funny. No they don't pay me enough but I have scaled down my hours accordingly. I learned long ago not to give up my life to any job. Life is too short.
As for the teachers, there is a certain amount of reconsidering salaries, but truthfully the raises have been pretty puny. I haven't had a raise in a couple of years-- hence the unofficial work slowdown. Working with Turkish management can be a thrill, too, as you can imagine. however, at the same time I have friends at Koc Univ who have also not had a raise in 4 or 5 years.
it will be very interesting to see what the new year brings. Prosperity for everyone, inshallah |

Dear Molly as the person who came up with thoses 'convoluted figuring', let me tell you their right. The issue that concerns me and what I hope will gain your support ( Trojon Horse if you will ) is to ensure that wages go up and that the quality of teaching goes up with it. Molly you are the only brave soul from the Chain schools here, it falls apone you to take up the challenge. Why you and E.Time,l its simple if the big boys play fair then every one will have to play fair:!:
One: All schools have to stop giving jobs to the fly by night wounder boys and girls who come here for one sesson and move on.
Two: All schools have to ensure that their teachers know their stuff.
Three: Tthat pay and conditions are set in a way that makes the people who know they can get better stay on, rather than leave.
As the year draws to end let us accept that there are two standars for teachers in this city. Those that have developed their skills and have a network get payed alot more than others do.
If we want to have a strong community here, and we want respect, then we have to both earn it and demand it. I'v done my time and I'v leant my trade so now I demand that others respect me.
Yet Molly you must agree that while we have weak teachers and good teachers being payed the same low rates, we will all loss a little respect.
As long as the wheels turn in the right direction I can wait.
Happy New Year to you. |

What do you all expect with someone like Molly?
I was working with a bloke who worked in Ist form mid 80s to mid 90s and knew Molly. She told him that as Turkish girls were increasingly likely to shag their boyfriends it was becoming increasingly harder for foreign women like her to get boyfriends. Life is too short Molly??? |

Oh come on! I never said anything like that and I don't appreciate your putting it on here. Life is too short for unfounded comments like that, and whoever originally said it obviously did not know me at all, since I did not even come to istanbul until 1998. Shame on you.
I looked at your other posts and they are very negative and often focussing on body parts or shagging. I would suggest you get some counselling, since you don't seem to be getting anything else. |

Just out of interest, what is the longest thread on this website, and do you think we're getting close to it? |

I think the winner thus far is our ghost's Tmer course complaints. I believe it nudged up into 6 pages. Also in the running are the things that make you go *&/%%* and non white wants to teach in Turkey
Come on y'all! Let's keep gabbling nonsense to push this one into the stratosphere.... |
