Gordon,

Many programs in the US offer a concurrent MA/PHD. So unless you have the the PHD you have no degree! If you started the program and did not finish it, you would not receive any degree. So if you did 4 years of a PHD program and dropped out you would still only have a BA.

Are you sure that's true? Every single MA/PHD program--"concurrent" or otherwise--that I know of requires you to complete--i.e., technically earn--the MA degree credits first, then move on to the PhD. I also know a number of people who have dropped out early from PhD programs...yet left with an MA. Finally, while Britain and (I believe) Australia have well-established correspondence PhD programs, there are very few accredited universities in the States which offer them. The only three I could find--Capella University, University of Phoenix, and Walden University--require the MA before admission to the PhD.

I'd be really interested in specific examples of accredited US programs where this is not the case--even one or two would be helpful. Thanks!

So far I am looking at some website and it looks that you might be correct. I never doubted that you technically take the credits for the M.A. I just thought that there were some schools that awarded a PHD and that is all. I knew that you had to take as many classes as if you did an MA and then aPHD (I was never implying that you could just go earn a BA and then PHD), I just thought that some schools wanted only PHD candidates and only offered PHD's to deter people who only wanted a Masters degree. I will look some more but it seems that I was mistaken. I thought that the schools that offered concurrent M.A.'s would not offer you an M.A. unless you went through and earned a PHD.
