Otterman Ollie - Birds without Wings is based on the village of Kayakoy near Fethiye - a lovely valley with the ruins of the thousand or so "Greek" cottages. Pretty evocative place. I worked in tourism down there for a few years and it received alot of coverage in the press, with locals wondering if it would be a willing victim of the "Cephalonia Effect". Sadly what's happened is that quite a few villas sprung up pretty quickly, making a few families very wealthy before the Belediye actually started applying their planning permission rules. Of course a few backhanders have still taken place.
It's still a wonderful place - though the river he mentions with the submerged tombs is probably Letoon, a little further down the coast. |
