I imagine all of the above reasons. I originally wanted to live in Mexico, but I spent a year in Indonesia to get some experience on my resume. I left simply because one yar of life in polluted, crowded Jakarta was enough to last me a lifetime.
I don't think it hurts you at all to leave after a year - if you complete your contract successfully. It's leaving before the contract expires that looks awful. |

Taiwan - my first teaching gig. I worked there for a year and returned again for five months a few years later. I thought it was a great place to live.
Australia - worked part time at the language centre in the university where I was studying.
China - worked as a private tutor for a Taiwanese businessman. Not really a typical teaching in China experience.
Thailand - my current location. First job was in a university and it failed to meet my expectations in many ways. Now working in a high school and much happier. |

Interesting question. Do you mean you found much in Korea (or any other east country) that reminded you of home? I personally found even the pollution had a distinctive Mongolian-red-dirt quality mixed with a sulfuric acid rotten-egg smell. And that was the cleanest city in the country. Not exacty Kansas, Toto. |

| I have taught in Hong Kong (3 years), Thailand (a few nights on vacation), Taiwan (2 years), and Japan (going on my ninth year). Money has been the best in Japan, people were the best in Taiwan (also best food and worst pollution), and Hong Kong was the best for hiking and a lot of government sponsored entertainment (and a lot of generous students). |

Interesting what Boy Wonder and XXX and 2 Over Lee said about poland and russia.
Do you have any tips, contacts, etc. re: Poland or other parts of E. and Cent.Europe? I have done freelance journalism, graphic art and cartooning, and taught english in a few countries, but only have experience in the Czech Rep. in Europe. I'm also looking at finding an affordable place with some artistic community/tourism to set up a bar/gallery/cafe/antique shop.
cheers
Mick
