China also has laws against people with any mental disorder from entering the Country for work purposes. Arguably, someone with no degree, no English degree, no experience, no training, lacks any understanding of pedogogy or methodology for ESL, but still believes that China needs them to teach ESL, well that poor delusional sole may be barred from China on medical grounds. Admittedly China has not interpreted the regs this strictly yet. I think I will plant a seed. |

Thanks for your concern, jinxy22. I have been seeing a physio, as well as a doctor, an acupuncturist, and an "active release therapist" (don't ask!), for over a year. It now looks to me as if only time is going to heal this, if anything will. I have more or less resigned myself to abandoning my career (and degree) in music, and going into education. I have discovered over the past few years that teaching is where my real interest lies anyway, and I have always had a passion for the English language, so it seems natural that I would move into the EFL field.
Ideally, I would acquire some formal education in EFL (other than the admittedly pathetic TESOL that I have), and I hope to in the future. For now, though, I lack the money to start a new degree, and I would love some more experience teaching. Since the misguided directors in China seem to desire "a warm body", and I am a brave enough warm body, why shouldn't I go? I may learn something about teaching, and my students may learn a little bit of English. I do not see how they (or any "qualified foreign teachers") will be any worse off than if I do not go.

Now you have opened a new can of worms.
You say you are injurred.
China has laws that may bar you from legal entry depending upon the nature of your injury.
Better check this out very carefully. |
I have looked into this, as far as the medical examination goes. The injury does not leave me unable to deal with day-to-day life. It is a specific overuse injury that keeps me from playing, but I doubt that it would be apparent even to a doctor, unless I were to complain. In other words, I am not an undesirable cripple. But thanks for your concern, ESL Guru .
By the way, jinxy, is West Side Story not the best musical ever?! And I don't even like musicals! That is the only one I enjoy playing. |

The second post in this thread asked "Is this a troll?"
I hope you had fun playing your little game.
Like I said in my first post, "China does not need you. Stay out of China."
So sorry to hear that you will not grace us with your teraching abilities. |

guru ...
i don't know what the hell ur problem is ...
u tell me ... don't go to teach until you get your degree .. i have been on this site asking people's opinions ... i have decided that my life would fare better if i complete university .. hence my reason for posting .. to gain solid advice. i was going to throw it away for a while to teach and get out of here. losing my mother in sept was hard on me and i've been upset about it all year. from the time i first posted until today, i had not yet heard back from any universities. today i discovered i got accepted into the program i wanted at the university i wanted. so yes, things have changed.
how sad and lonely your life must be with the constant anger you carry around. if anyone is to be called a troll, i would say it's you kind sir.
i apologize to everyone for losing my cool.

Jinx -
Ya can't apologize for losing what ya never had. No son - you were never cool!
First you are bored and compelled to teach and within a week you change your life plan and go back to school based upon advice received in this thread? How dead do you think we are?
I love my life! It's your I hate! |

i used the word bored in my initial post because i didn't want to get into the personal aspect of why i want to teach. i have not felt the need ( as you have ) to change any of the posts i have put on here even though you can't manage to let the one word slide.
and this is not something i thought about for a week .. i took a tefl course here .. i have chatted at great lengths with family and friends. and i found this site when really narrowing in on what to do. i did recieve some excellent advice here .. people informing me of risks involved with teaching illegally. this was what i was looking for.... i've decided that is not a risk i want to take and i know i should finish university now, otherwise i never will.. instead i'll complete the years needed in school and when qualified i will then go to teach.
i have known some grumpy old men in my life, but you definitly take the cake. i do apologize for my youthful outlook on life and wanting to challenge myself.. i'm quite certain i'm not the only person out there trying to figure out their life plan. there's no need to be jealous of me any longer old man. i will not be joining you in china. i will instead continue my education as my mother would be happy with ..
take a bath, enjoy some wine, relax and find a hobby guru. cheers. |

If they are teaching but don't know how, what are they teaching?
China is not one big baby teething ring where newbies can cut their first teaching teeth! The students in China are entitled to better than that.
Just imagine, born in China! Just one of 1.3 billion. Everyone struggling to survive.
Learning English is perceived to be the economic key to personal growth and economic prosperity, the way out of dismal poverty.
Along comes this teeny bopping high school grad who is going to teach you English. First question: Which of the 7 standard Englishes or 35 regional Englishes will you teach? Oh! You did not know about this? You were just gonna let em know how ya'all talk back home?
Second question: What pedogogy will you follow? Ok I will wait while you look up pedogogy in your dictionary. What? You do not have a dictionary? Thought you claimed to want to teach English but you are gonna JUST DO IT without a dictionary?
Third question: What methodology will you use? Oh, you thought your employer would handle all of this for you? And exactly why do you think they give you the title "foreign expert"?
Fourth question: What teaching materials will you bring with you? Your scout knife? OK!
Jinx - I am not bitter about anything!!! I am not grumpy! I edited some prior posts to give you the benefit of the doubt, of which there is none any more! I am scared to death that my child may end up in some happy camper's class where he will learn nothing or even worse, bad language that will fossilize and he will become untrainable and uncorrectable. His English based future completely destroyed by some space cadet high school grad who just had to come to China to "teach English"?
There is an 18 year old Russian lad with no degree who "speaks" English as a second language posing as a 21 year old American currently teaching "Ruslish" (or is that rubbish) in Shanghai at a major private school. Maybe you would like your child's future ruined by him?
Wake up people! China needs real teachers who can provide real assisatnce to a very needy people. These people need and deserve better!! Be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
Jinx - I also note how your story changes every time to run up against a valid argument. Now you sudenly have a TEFL cert???????? Never mentioned that before!
"monsieur guru may have pushed me to become the best damn esl teacher asia has ever seen ..." Jinx But now that is out and change of course in mid stream.
Roger - Now I am disappointed that you did not see the original post for what it was!
TROLL! TROLL! TROLL!
AND NOW, AFTER REPEATED LAMENMTS BY OUR JINXY THAT HE WAS NOT CANDID FROM THE BEGINNING, AND WOULD BE MORE FORTHCOMING IN FUTURE POSTS - NOW HE CLAIMS THAT HE HAS A TEFL CERT. Roger - you gave him that one in your post! Shame on you.
Liar, liar, pants on fire! Jinx you are nothing but FLAME BAIT! |

hmm ..
i understand the world sees you as an angry and jaded fool sometimes, but that means nothing to me..
i DID post that i took a tefl course .. in my second post. time to get those eyes checked old timer ..
i have no need to continue this bs any longer with you ....
i have teetered between teaching or going to school ... i don't think that's so incredible that you need constantly attack me.
so i chose school...
i will do well with whatever i do and always have. i need not some crotchety old fart throwing "advice" at me.
once again i am not a troll ...
cheers. |

Jinxy22 -
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACCEPTANCE TO A "POLITICAL SCIENCE" PROGRAM.
A VERY SMART CARREER CHOICE! THE WORLD SUFFERS FROM A SHORTAGE OF POLITICAL SCIENTISTS AND I AM CONFIDENT YOU WILL MAKE THE BEST DARN POLITICAL SCIENTIST IN THE WHOLE WORLD!
This is also great news for all of those who may have had the misfortune of being your English student. In this thread you consistently failed to communicate effectively, a sure sign that you would have no doubt made the best darn ESL teacher Asia had ever seen.
